Hokkaido Shrine stands beside Maruyama Park in Sapporo. Its regular winter closing time is 16:00, so give it a daylight slot before planning your evening in town. Access to the grounds and the opening of the goshuin and amulet counters are separate matters.

Choose the shrine in Maruyama

Set your destination to Hokkaido Shrine at 474 Miyagaoka, Chuo-ku, Sapporo, next to Maruyama Park. Hokkaido Jingu Tongu in central Sapporo is a different location: check the address as well as the name on your map.

This remains a place of worship and ceremonies. Follow signs about access and photography, and leave worshippers room to move. Decide whether you want a walk around the grounds or a service at a counter before choosing an arrival time.

Work back from the winter closing time

The Sapporo Tourist Association lists regular gate hours of 07:00–16:00 for 1 November–30 December and February; 07:00–17:00 in March; and 06:00–17:00 in April–October. Gate opening does not mean every counter starts serving visitors at that time.

Treat 31 December and January separately because New Year arrangements apply. Check the shrine’s announcement for the actual year. This guide does not provide the 2027 New Year opening schedule.

Leave time to walk back out before closing, instead of aiming to arrive just before it. Our planning suggestion is to treat this as an outdoor visit and arrange your return journey and an indoor break separately.

An early visit is different from getting a goshuin

The Sapporo Tourist Association lists the usual amulet and goshuin counters as open from 09:00 until gate closing. A day with a 07:00 opening therefore does not imply that you can obtain a goshuin then. Check the service window separately from your time for worship.

A goshuin is a seal received as a record of a shrine visit. Check the shrine’s current information for offerings, counter procedures and prayer-service applications. We could not retrieve the shrine website text on the check date, so this guide does not quote service charges or promise reservations or same-day availability.

Start with Maruyama-Koen Station, then allow walking time

The Hokkaido Tourism Organization estimates about 15 minutes on foot from Maruyama-Koen subway station. It is on the Tozai Line. Your journey still includes an outdoor walk after leaving the station; this estimate is not the total travel time from your hotel.

Snow, ice, bags and walking pace can change that estimate. Leave a margin instead of using a map’s shortest time to target the closing minute. If you need to avoid stairs or require assistance, ask the station and shrine about the specific route beforehand.

Do not base a driving plan on assumed free parking or guaranteed spaces. Official tourism information recommends public transport during weekends, holidays, blossom season, festivals and New Year crowds. If adding a bus, check the service for your travel date and your return journey.

Build a Maruyama outing around the shrine first

For a visit combined with Maruyama Park, fix the gate and counter window first, then place the park walk and a meal around it. This is an editorial planning suggestion, not a guaranteed sightseeing duration.

You could save central Sapporo for the evening and keep the shrine visit in daylight. In poor weather, shorten the outdoor portion. Check park access, nearby business hours and snow conditions independently; an open shrine does not establish any of those.

Questions about admission, evenings and New Year

Do you need a ticket? Official tourism information lists admission to the grounds as free. That does not make goshuin, amulets or prayer services free.

Can you drop in after dark? Regular winter closing is 16:00, so do not plan on evening access. Any special-event arrangements need their own announcement.

Are January hours the same? New Year arrangements require a separate check. Do not carry a previous year’s holiday article or an ordinary-hours table forward to the next New Year.

Sources and check date

Checked the Sapporo Tourist Association and Hokkaido Tourism Organization on 3 November 2026, Japan time. The shrine website returned an error and its text was not verified. This is for ordinary-season planning, not a guarantee of same-day gate or counter operations, New Year hours, parking or path conditions. No on-site visit or booking was made.
