Plan how to get around Okushiri and how to leave it at the same time as your arrival. Ferries, flights and buses have date-specific conditions. Secure your outward journey, return and accommodation before filling the days with sights, then choose an area you can actually reach.
Ferry from Esashi or flight from Hakodate or Okadama?
Compare the Esashi ferry if you want to bring the car you are using on Hokkaido's main island. Passenger tickets and vehicle transport do not have identical reservation rules. For a rental car, ask the rental company whether ferry transport is allowed, how insurance applies and how a cancellation would affect the return arrangements.
Flying avoids the road journey to Esashi, but check the airport carefully: Sapporo's direct service uses Okadama, not New Chitose. A bus, accommodation transfer or rental car after arriving at Okushiri Airport needs separate planning.
The town's flight timetable lists Hakodate flights generally on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, and Okadama flights on Friday and Sunday, for September 24–November 30, 2026. Some October dates switch, so do not book from the weekday pattern alone. For December 1, 2026–February 28, 2027, Hakodate is listed daily; Okadama service is suspended from December 1. Do not extend these arrangements beyond their stated period; check your exact date with JAL.
A cancelled ferry does not guarantee a seat on a flight, or vice versa. Check operation status, available seats and the journey between the port and airport before changing plans.
Allow time between reaching Esashi and boarding
The Hakodate–Esashi route 610 bus is an option from Hakodate Station or Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station. Its October 2026 timetable includes weekday-only services. The stop name “Ubagamicho Ferry-mae” does not prove that the bus leaves you beside the current boarding berth.
The ferry berth at Esashi changed on October 1, 2026. Consult the boarding-location notice in the operator's berth-change notice for terminal procedures and the transfer to the new berth. A free shuttle is planned through February 28, 2027, subject to construction progress. Check the validity period of the shuttle timetable separately.
Work backwards in this order:
- Find the ferry departure for your travel date.
- Confirm the check-in deadline for your passenger or vehicle category and the transfer to the berth.
- Choose a bus that leaves enough time between arrival and check-in.
- If the connection does not work, compare a night in Esashi, another sailing date or a flight.
The reservation guidance says second-class unreserved passenger tickets on the Okushiri route cannot be booked and are bought at the counter on the day. Reserved seating and vehicles are treated differently. Motorcycles and bicycles have a one-hour-before-departure instruction: do not assume one deadline fits everyone. There is no onboard dining room, and the Okushiri shop is listed as suspended. Arrange food before boarding.
Without a car, check the return bus first
Choose accommodation and a limited set of places to visit before trying to tour the entire island. Separate time around the port from an outing towards Aonae rather than assuming everything can be combined.
The October 2026 timetable linked from the town bus page has services that vary between weekdays, weekends, public holidays and school holidays, plus some journeys requiring a change at the airport. An outward arrival time alone does not establish a usable sightseeing trip. Put the return after your visit, the accommodation's dinner deadline and your departing ferry or flight into the same plan.
The published standard fare is ¥200 for any section, paid when boarding; cashless payment is not supported. Reduced fares have eligibility conditions and should not be assumed for every visitor. Bring cash and check the current timetable.
Ask your accommodation together: “Can you collect us at the port or airport? Must we reserve the transfer? What happens if a cancellation changes our arrival date? If we book without dinner, are there nearby meal options?” Transfers and meals are not universal services at every property.
Pick between two sightseeing areas
Okushiri district: Nabetsuru Rock. The town's introduction describes the island's pot-handle-shaped landmark. Fit a viewpoint visit around your arrival, departure and the weather. Do not build a poor-weather plan around a long stay beside the sea.
Aonae district: Okushiri Island Tsunami Museum. The official museum page introduces the 1993 Hokkaido Nansei-oki earthquake and recovery. For 2026, opening is April 18–October 31, 09:00–17:00, closed Mondays except in July and August and on public holidays. It is not a year-round indoor backup for winter. Check opening dates separately for 2027 or later. The page lists English exhibit explanations and English, Chinese and Korean translations through QR codes.
One night or two: compare usable time on the island
One night: limit arrival day to the accommodation area and one sight, then prioritise the journey back the next day. This suits travellers with confirmed island transport who are happy with a short visit. If a return outing to Aonae does not fit between your arrival and departure, leave it out.
Two nights: keep arrival and departure days mainly for transport, with the full middle day for one area. Without a car, check that middle day's operating pattern and return bus first. Two nights do not eliminate cancellation risk.
Allow a separate buffer on Hokkaido's main island rather than placing an inflexible flight or important appointment immediately after your island return. Include possible extra accommodation, meals and changed transport in your Hokkaido trip budget. The ferry reservation guidance says a cancelled sailing cancels the reservation and requires rebooking; do not assume an automatic transfer to the next sailing.
A booking note to fill in
- Outward and return: dates / ferry or flight / berth or airport / check-in deadline
- On the island: bring a car or arrange one locally / bus operating days and return / accommodation transfer reservation
- Visits: area / opening date / return service / alternative if wind or rain stops the outing
- Accommodation: meals / latest arrival / change and cancellation terms if transport is cancelled
- Main island: transport to Esashi / nights before or after / onward transport change deadline
Compare accommodation before and after the crossing, airport or port transfers, vehicle transport and car rental, not just passenger fares. A free-return-ferry promotion has participant, accommodation and activity conditions. Do not deduct it from your budget until eligibility and availability are confirmed.
