Sapporo Shiryoukan occupies the former Court of Appeals at the western end of Odori Park. Entry is free, but the building and its individual rooms do not all close together. In winter, last entry to the Hiroshi Ohba Memorial Room is 17:40: choose your arrival time around what you want to see.

A former courthouse to visit, not the city records office

The address is Odori Nishi 13-chome, Chuo-ku, Sapporo. Built as the Court of Appeals in 1926, the building is now an Important Cultural Property used for exhibitions and cultural activities. Select Sapporo Shiryoukan on your map; it is separate from Hokkaido Museum and the Clock Tower.

Despite the name sometimes being translated as an archives or historical museum, this is not the place to assume you can research old newspapers and photographs. The official FAQ says the former historical-materials office moved away and the current venue does not hold those collections. It directs research enquiries to Sapporo City Archives or libraries. Decide whether you want a building visit or records research.

Choose architecture, courtroom history or art

The official permanent-exhibition page lists the Criminal Courtroom Exhibition Room, city-history room, Hiroshi Ohba Memorial Room, SIAF Lounge and Odori Exchange Gallery. Your priorities can differ depending on whether you want the old courthouse, local history or art.

The Ohba room introduces work by the Sapporo-born artist and cartoonist, including a recreated studio. The mini galleries host organizer-led exhibitions, so content and hours are not necessarily the same on every visit. Check the current listing if a particular show or work is your reason for coming.

Our planning suggestion is to choose one priority room first, then fit the building and other rooms around it. Allow time for reading and moving between rooms instead of assuming a fixed duration suits every visitor.

19:00 building closing does not mean 19:00 for every room

Regular building hours are 09:00–19:00. The Hiroshi Ohba Memorial Room operates 09:00–18:00 from 1 November to 31 March, with last entry at 17:40. From 1 April to 31 October it operates 09:00–19:00, last entry 18:40.

The SIAF Lounge is listed as 10:00–18:00, closing at 16:00 on the second and fourth Thursdays. Do not use building hours as the service window for every exhibition or cafe. Mini-gallery hours can also be shortened by their organizers.

Regular closure is Monday, or the next weekday if Monday is a holiday, and 29 December–3 January. Check both the building calendar and the availability of the exhibition or event you want. Arriving just before last entry may leave little time to look.

Walk west from Nishi-Juitchome Station exit 1

The official access guide estimates a five-minute walk west from exit 1 of Nishi-Juitchome Station on the Tozai subway line. That is an outdoor walk from the exit, not the total trip from Sapporo Station or Odori Station.

Snow, crossings and luggage can change the time. Do not plan on an underground connection all the way to the building. The guide also lists about six minutes on foot from the Chuo-Kuyakusho-Mae or Nishi-Jugo-Chome tram stops; check service on your travel date separately.

There is no general visitor car park. The FAQ tells visitors with disabilities to contact the office about parking. Ask about your specific access needs before travelling, including any route that must avoid stairs.

Check photography, stairs and language support

The FAQ permits photography except in the Hiroshi Ohba Memorial Room; professional filming or photography requires an advance application. Follow room- and exhibition-specific signs when you visit rather than treating this as blanket permission for every work.

There is no lift. A chair stairlift is installed at the north-side stairs, and visitors are asked to contact staff to use it. Do not assume it provides an independently usable route for every mobility need; confirm the assistance you require.

The official site links to English, Korean, Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese leaflets. This does not promise a multilingual guide will always be on duty. Ask the venue about the form of assistance you need. The official English leaflet provides a general introduction; use the current exhibition page for room-specific hours.

Fit it into an Odori walk or a wet-weather plan

For an indoor stop combined with Odori Park, fix the room and lounge windows first. If you want to see Ohba’s work on a winter afternoon, the building’s 19:00 closing alone is not enough information.

Indoor displays can help with a wet or snowy day, but the station walk is outside. Shorten outdoor walking in poor weather and check your next transport and meal separately. This is editorial planning advice, not a guarantee of rooms being open or uncrowded.

Free admission does not establish free participation in every event. Workshops, room hire and other activities have their own booking, price and eligibility information. This guide does not promise spaces or make a booking.
