Plan Upopoy in Shiraoi: admission versus programme reservations, 2026–27 winter hours and closures, station access and onward travel to Noboribetsu.

Plan Upopoy around its opening calendar and the programmes you want to attend, then choose your trains. The National Ainu Museum and Park in Shiraoi is a place to learn about Ainu history and culture. It deserves its own visit plan rather than a quick, unplanned stop between transport connections. Official information below was checked on October 28, 2026.

Opening days and winter hours

The 2026–27 official calendar gives 9 a.m.–6 p.m. through October 31, then 9 a.m.–5 p.m. from November 1 to March 31. Park entry ends one hour before closing; museum entry ends 30 minutes before closing.

Mondays generally close, with holiday substitutions and exceptions: use the actual calendar. It also lists December 28–January 4 and February 27–March 8 as closure periods for this season. Do not book a winter visit from the weekday alone. An early last admission is particularly important if you arrive after lunch.

Admission and programme reservations are different

The official ticket guide lists standard day admission at ¥1,200 for adults, ¥600 for high-school students and free for junior-high age and below. Paid activities and museum special exhibitions are outside that basic fee. The page also lists web discounts and an after-2-p.m. ticket: compare current conditions with the hours left for your visit.

Same-day tickets are available at the counter; advance purchase and reservations for some programmes are available online. Admission does not itself settle every programme arrangement. Before paying, check the programme you want, its separate booking requirements and charges. This article links the official information and makes no ticket purchase or reservation for you.

From JR Shiraoi Station

The official access map gives approximately 500 metres, about ten minutes on foot from JR Shiraoi Station's north exit. Treat this as a walking estimate, with extra time for crossings, luggage, snow and your group's pace.

For rail planning, JR Hokkaido's Upopoy guidance is a useful starting point. Search services that actually stop at Shiraoi on your date, both outward and back. Include transfers and station walking rather than treating a train's running time as your total door-to-door journey.

Choose what to see before fixing a short visit

Start with museum learning and one programme that interests your party. Use the official timetable for the day's programme details, language, starting place and booking arrangements. Leave room to move between locations and read the explanations; a list of start times alone is not a workable itinerary.

Follow the posted rules and staff directions about photography and participation. The photograph here shows a hearth at Upopoy in November 2020, not a promise that a particular room or activity will be available on your date. Ainu culture is living culture; use the museum's own interpretation instead of treating the visit as a staged photo opportunity.

Winter, children and time outdoors

Allow warm layers and suitable footwear for outdoor movement even if museum time is your priority. Build in breaks and decide which programme matters most before adding more. Ask the operator about accessibility or equipment you need rather than assuming that all routes or programmes fit every visitor.

An editorial planning sequence is: return train, departure from the park, priority programme, museum time, food and arrival. If a late arrival leaves too little time, compare changing the date with a shorter visit before buying a ticket. Neither this sequence nor the station walk guarantees a fixed visit duration.

Sapporo return or continuing to Noboribetsu?

For a Sapporo base, compare the return journey with Sapporo accommodation areas. If continuing to an onsen, keep the onward train and the transfer to the hot-spring town separate from your Upopoy visit. The Noboribetsu day-bath guide explains why station arrival, bath reception and final departure are different deadlines.

Use the Hokkaido trip-budget guide to add transport, admission, separately paid programmes and food for everyone. Avoid buying an extra activity just to fill a short gap before your train. Choosing one main visit makes the day's costs and time easier to judge.
