Plan Kamome Island in southern Hokkaido: buses from Hakodate, the walking connection, stairs and coastal-route checks. Work backwards from your return transport before adding a sunset walk.

Kamome Island suits a day focused on Esashi's harbour scenery and history. Allow for the journey from Hakodate rather than adding it as a short stop between city sights. This is Esashi in Hiyama, southern Hokkaido, not the similarly named town in northern Hokkaido.

Do you need a ferry to reach Kamome Island?

The Hiyama regional government's introduction describes a breakwater connecting the island with Esashi's town centre. Walking to Kamome Island is separate from taking a ferry to Okushiri. Identify the pedestrian approach and current access conditions instead of treating arrival at the harbour as the end of your journey.

The town tourism guide introduces Heishi Rock, Itsukushima Shrine and the lighthouse. The area also connects with the history of herring fishing and Kitamaebune trading ships. Choose whether coastal scenery or historical places matter most to you before deciding how far to walk. Sources were checked on October 28, 2026.

From Hakodate without a car: investigate route 610

The town's Hakodate–Esashi bus page carries a timetable revised on October 1, 2026, with departures from Hakodate Station and Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station. It identifies Ubagami-cho Ferry-mae (姥神町フェリー前) as the stop for Kamome Island.

Some services on that page do not run on weekends or Japanese public holidays. Check each direction for your date; the existence of a departure in a table does not mean it operates every day. The Hakodate Bus route directory provides another route to current operator information. This article does not promise a particular departure or train connection.

An editorial planning sequence is: return bus and onward train, end of your walk, meal, then arrival in Esashi. If you have a fixed dinner or train reservation in Hakodate, choose transport that gets you back in time. Shorten or reschedule the outing when the connections do not work. Do not assume a taxi will be available on demand after missing the last bus.

Stairs and access checks matter more than a circuit time

The official walking map includes stairs in its suggested route. Choose between upper-island viewpoints and the coastal sections according to your party's needs and available time. Ask the tourist information office about the specific route you need for a wheelchair or stroller rather than assuming the complete circuit is step-free.

The town retains an older partial-reopening notice that distinguishes the stair approach from restrictions on the coastal walkway. That notice alone establishes neither full opening nor full closure today. Check current conditions before departure and follow local barriers and diversion signs.

If wind, waves or rain make walking uncomfortable, choose a shorter accessible visit rather than making the waterside path essential. A photograph of visitors on a path is not evidence that it is suitable on your day. This page's photograph was taken in August 2013.

A sunset visit needs its own return plan

Decide whether to wait for evening scenery using the return journey as well as the weather. Work out sunset time, when to finish the walk, the walk back to your stop and waiting time separately. This is not a schedule guaranteeing both a sunset view and a connection back to Hakodate.

Avoid a plan that depends on rushing along an unfamiliar path in darkness or on a bus waiting for you. If evening scenery is your priority and the return service does not fit, confirm accommodation availability, the actual location and arrival arrangements before changing the itinerary.

Fitting Esashi into a Hakodate stay

An editorial day plan is: confirm luggage-storage arrangements at your base, travel to Esashi, choose a meal and a manageable walk, then return with spare time. Check restaurant opening and last orders separately. Keeping the full island circuit, historical-building visits and sunset as options rather than three compulsory stops makes the day easier to adjust.

The Hakodate accommodation-area guide helps compare access to the station and luggage arrangements. Drivers can use the Hokkaido driving guide to check their actual starting point, approach and parking instead of relying on a town-to-town estimate. Add transport, meals and any facilities you actually enter for the whole party in your trip budget.
