Tenguyama is a separate mountain excursion from central Otaru: take the bus to the ropeway base, then plan both the ascent and your journey back. For winter 2026–27, the operator lists November 28–March 28 service, with the last normal ascent at 19:48 and descent at 20:00. Early November visitors need to check the maintenance gap before making plans.
November closure and winter operating dates
The official hours and fares list summer operation through November 3, 2026 and winter operation from November 28, 2026 to March 28, 2027. November 4–27 falls between those operating seasons: do not schedule a ropeway visit during that gap. Check the operator's announcements again before travelling, including on an otherwise scheduled operating day.
Winter sightseeing and ski-area operation have separate schedules. A winter ropeway date does not establish that ski lifts or summer outdoor attractions are available.
Winter hours: the last ascent is earlier than the last descent
Normal winter hours are 09:00–19:48 uphill and 09:00–20:00 downhill. The published standard interval is 12 minutes, with more frequent operation possible during busy periods. These are operating limits, rather than a suggested time to arrive for a relaxed visit.
The operator lists shorter New Year hours:
- December 31, January 2 and January 3: last ascent 16:48; last descent 17:00.
- January 1: last ascent 15:48; last descent 16:00.
All four dates open at 09:00. Those earlier finishes can change an evening-view plan substantially. Leave time for ticket purchase, a return queue and the bus connection; the ropeway's last descent is not the last bus or train time.
Seasonal fares and children
Published normal round-trip fares are ¥2,000 adult and ¥1,000 child in winter, compared with ¥1,800 and ¥900 in summer. The adult category begins at junior-high-school age. One preschool child travels free per accompanying adult; additional preschool children require the child fare.
Bus-and-ropeway packages and accommodation-related discounts have their own conditions. Compare the current official offer with the journeys you will actually take before buying. Do not assume an aquarium combination ticket is refundable whenever the ropeway stops: the operator specifically gives that product a seven-day validity and a weather-related no-refund condition. Read the product conditions separately from ordinary ropeway admission.
Otaru Station to the base by bus
The official access guide directs visitors to stand 4 at Otaru Station bus terminal, route 9 for Tenguyama Ropeway. This reaches the base station, not the summit. Check the current dated timetable and the return departure before boarding; winter traffic and waiting time belong in your plan.
For a Sapporo day trip, allow separate time for the train to Otaru, the local bus and the ropeway. Avoid treating a central canal walk and a summit visit as adjoining stops.
Canal first or mountain first?
Our planning suggestion is to keep the mountain portion flexible. If the summit is clear and the ropeway is running, visit Tenguyama before committing the remaining time to the canal and shops. If your priority is the evening view, finish central sightseeing earlier and confirm both downhill service and transport back to the station before going uphill.
Cloud or snow can remove the view even when transport runs. Check current conditions rather than expecting the scene in a promotional photograph. Wear footwear suitable for slippery surfaces and bring a warm outer layer for outdoor viewing.
Build a realistic Otaru day
Use the Otaru winter guide for snow and event planning, or the Otaru day trip for the central walking route. The aquarium guide covers another excursion with its own transport and opening hours; adding both mountain and aquarium requires extra travel time.
The photograph shows the view in August 2011, not current winter conditions. Operating details above were checked against the operator on October 28, 2026; recheck before departure.
