The fastest way from Sapporo to Asahikawa is the Kamui or Lilac limited express: from 1 hour 25 minutes, station to station, for a regular price of ¥5,440 one way. The highway bus takes longer, about 2 hours 5 minutes (about 2 hours 25 minutes in winter), but costs ¥2,500. Either works for a day trip, so you can see Asahiyama Zoo or the Asahikawa Winter Festival without moving hotels.

By train: the Kamui and Lilac
The Kamui and Lilac both run between JR Sapporo Station and JR Asahikawa Station, and JR Hokkaido gives the fastest trip as 1 hour 25 minutes. Since March 14, 2026, every JR Hokkaido limited express has been all-reserved, including these two trains: there are no non-reserved cars, so you need a basic fare ticket plus a reserved-seat limited express ticket. The regular price for the two together is ¥5,440, of which the limited express ticket is ¥2,360.
If a train is full, JR Hokkaido sells a "seat-unassigned ticket" at the same price as a reserved-seat ticket. It lets you take any limited express that day between the stations on the ticket and use an empty reserved seat, but you must move if the passenger who booked it arrives, and you stand if no seat is free.
Cheaper tickets on Eki-net
JR Hokkaido's discounts for this route are sold only through Eki-net, JR East's online booking site (free registration):
- Tokudane 1: a one-way fare and reserved seat together for ¥2,440–4,340, depending on demand. On sale from one month before travel until 23:50 the day before, with a limited number of seats. You collect the ticket from a station machine before boarding, and cannot change it after collecting.
- Ticketless limited express ticket (Toku-wari): the limited express ticket alone for ¥1,530–2,120, used with an IC card such as Kitaca or Mobile Suica for the fare. On sale until the train's departure on the day; JR Hokkaido gives the total with the regular fare as ¥4,610–5,200.
JR Hokkaido no longer sells the old S-kippu non-reserved return ticket (not sold from March 9, 2026); in November 2025 it said station discount tickets for this route, including the Asahiyama Zoo ticket, would end in spring 2026 in favour of the Eki-net discounts.
With a rail pass
Both the Hokkaido Rail Pass and the Sapporo–Furano Area Pass cover the Kamui and Lilac, but you still need to reserve a seat before boarding. Our Hokkaido rail pass guide compares the passes with regular tickets; the area pass suits a trip that adds Furano and Biei.
By highway bus: Asahikawa-go
The Asahikawa-go highway bus is run jointly by Hokkaido Chuo Bus, JR Hokkaido Bus and Dohoku Bus; the route is about 140 km with no rest stop. The adult fare is ¥2,500 one way or ¥4,700 for a round trip. You pay when you get off, by contactless credit card or IC card. The buses have a toilet, four-across reclining seats and free Wi-Fi, and large bags go in the luggage hold.
The operator gives about 2 hours 5 minutes from April to November and about 2 hours 25 minutes from December to March. When a bus is full, you may be asked to use a folding seat or take the next bus. Check the timetable and the boarding stop in Sapporo on the operator's page before you go.
