Walk from Sapporo Station towards Odori and Susukino: Chi-Ka-Ho hours, the 520 m section, exits, luggage and when to consider the subway instead.

  • Chi-Ka-Ho is one part of the underground route, not its full length.
  • Passage hours are 05:45–00:30 the following day, not 24 hours.
  • Check the destination entrance and lift route before choosing an exit.

What Chi-Ka-Ho connects

Underground passages connect the Sapporo Station area with Odori and Susukino. Chi-Ka-Ho specifically refers to the section between the Sapporo and Odori subway stations. To continue to Susukino, follow the signs for the underground passages farther south at Odori; do not treat the entire journey as the Chi-Ka-Ho section.

Sapporo’s official tourism guide describes this section as about 520 metres and about a ten-minute walk. That is not a JR platform-to-hotel or JR station-to-Susukino journey time. Add the walk from your JR platform and ticket gate, crowds, finding the exit and waiting for a lift.

Opening hours and late returns

The operator lists passage hours as 05:45–24:30, meaning 00:30 the following day. Outside those hours you cannot pass through Chi-Ka-Ho. A late dinner or early airport departure therefore needs a route that does not depend on a closed passage.

These are passage hours, not the opening hours of every connected building, shop or lift entrance. Check the particular entrance you intend to use and the return route as well as the outward one. The operator and tourism pages linked below were read on 28 October 2026; recheck before travel.

Find the entrance before choosing an exit

For Odori, compare the destination address and building entrance with the exit signs before going upstairs. The exit nearest the map pin may leave a road crossing or a walk around the building. For Susukino, continue following the southbound passage signs, then make the same entrance check.

Underground access does not mean every attraction or hotel is reachable without going outdoors. On rainy or snowy days, choose one indoor destination first and check its last outdoor walking section. Do not assume a group of indoor attractions forms an entirely indoor circuit.

Suitcases, strollers and stairs

If stairs are a problem, locate the lift rather than relying only on an exit number. Check on-site equipment and construction notices; a closed lift can change the usable route. These are planning checks, not a verified step-free route to a particular hotel.

For a sightseeing return trip, ask whether your accommodation will hold your bag before carrying it through the city. Empty lockers and same-day storage are not guaranteed. If you do store a bag, record the collection location and deadline, and include the return detour before your train.

Walk or take the subway?

Walking underground is an option when you want to browse or avoid some outdoor exposure. If you are tired, have limited walking stamina or want to rest soon after arrival, compare the subway too. Reaching its ticket gates and platform still takes effort; one short stop is not automatically easier.

Choose accommodation by the walk from the actual exit to its entrance, not only the station name. For an airport arrival, plan the train journey, the walk from the JR platform and the final hotel access as separate parts. Route choice and luggage advice here are editorial suggestions, not guaranteed journey times.

The cover is our simplified route diagram, not a station map. Only the Sapporo–Odori Chi-Ka-Ho section is labelled 520 m; the diagram is not to scale and does not locate exits or lifts.
