New Chitose Airport to Sapporo: Train or Bus?

Take the train if your hotel is near Sapporo Station or you are happy to connect to the subway. Consider an airport bus if a stop on its actual route is close to your hotel. Compare the whole journey, including the walk after you get off.

Use this guide to choose a transfer, then check the operator's timetable for your travel date. Fares, last departures and service arrangements can change.

Train or bus: Choose for your hotel

The train suits: Travellers staying near Sapporo Station, those connecting to the subway and people who prefer to avoid road traffic. You still need time to reach the airport station and travel from Sapporo Station to the hotel.

The bus suits: Travellers whose hotel is close to a stop served by the chosen departure. Not every Sapporo-bound bus follows the same route, so check the specific service before boarding.

With large bags, fewer transfers may matter more than the shortest advertised journey. Check baggage rules and lift access as part of the decision.

After landing: Find your hotel's nearest stop

Once you have collected your bags, check the hotel address and its nearest station or bus stop. International arrivals need to allow for immigration as well as movement between terminal areas.

Follow the airport signs for JR trains or buses. Domestic and international terminals have different routes through the building and different bus boarding locations. Use the airport's official access information rather than copying a boarding-point number from another terminal.

By train: Useful for a Sapporo Station base

New Chitose Airport Station is beneath the airport. The fastest Rapid Airport journey to Sapporo is 37 minutes, but your chosen service may take longer. This is train time, not the time from landing to hotel check-in. See JR Hokkaido's airport guide.

Check the train's destination and stops before boarding. If you want a reserved seat, check availability and the additional seat charge; paying the ordinary fare alone does not give you access to a reserved seat. JR Hokkaido's English airport information explains the options.

At Sapporo Station, choose the exit for your hotel. For Odori or Susukino, a subway or taxi connection may make more sense than carrying luggage the whole way, particularly in poor weather.

By bus: The exact stop matters

Check both the destination and intermediate stops. A bus described as going to central Sapporo may not stop beside your hotel. The airport's bus page links to operators and routes.

Road conditions can delay arrival, so avoid a tight reservation immediately after the transfer. Confirm the operator's conditions for large luggage and anything you plan to bring into the passenger area.

For a Susukino hotel, compare the actual walk from the bus stop with the train-and-subway alternative. A short line on the map may involve busy crossings or snow-covered pavements.

Late arrivals: Landing time is not boarding time

Do not assume a scheduled landing leaves enough time for the final train or bus. You must first leave the aircraft, complete any entry procedures and collect your bags. Public transport may not wait for a delayed flight.

If your flight is late, check current departures again after arrival. If you cannot make them, ask the airport information desk about available transport and accommodation. Before choosing a taxi, confirm availability and the expected fare rather than assuming a car will be waiting.

Returning to the airport

Work backward from your airline's check-in, security and boarding deadlines. Include the journey from the hotel to the station or bus stop. Add separate time if you want a meal or shopping at the airport.

In winter or bad weather, check service updates early and leave room to take an earlier departure. If the first public-transport service cannot meet an early flight's requirements, arrange a different transfer or a different place to stay the night before.
