Landing late at New Chitose: check whether you can still reach Sapporo, then compare the two airport hotels and the airport onsen, including how each handles a night arrival.

This guide is for a late or delayed arrival at New Chitose: a slow queue at immigration, a delayed inbound flight, or a scheduled landing close to the end of the day. If your flight is on time and you only want to compare the train with the bus, New Chitose Airport to Sapporo covers that. Here the questions are whether you can still leave the airport tonight, and where to sleep if you cannot.

In short:

  1. Estimate when you will actually be out of the arrival hall, not when the plane lands.
  2. Check the JR or bus service for that time, and whether your hotel can still check you in.
  3. If either fails, confirm a place to stay at the airport or in Chitose before you leave the arrivals area. The airport options, from private hotel rooms to a paid shared seat, are compared below.

The terminal buildings close

Hokkaido Airports publishes opening hours on its service page: checked on 17 October 2026, the domestic terminal and the connecting facility ran 5:00–23:30, and the international terminal 5:00–21:00. The same page says that once the buildings close, you cannot stay overnight in the airport except in its accommodation facilities.

Waiting on a public bench until the first train is therefore not an option. The hours can change with delays and schedule changes, and on dates with late-night domestic flights only some domestic areas may stay open longer — so check the airport's notices and the closing time for your terminal on your date rather than working from a remembered figure. The exceptions are the facilities compared below, each with its own entry rules.

Is there a departure you can catch?

Check the timetable for your date. Between landing and the platform sit disembarking and, on an international arrival, immigration and customs — followed by the walk to the station, which is under the domestic terminal. A landing twenty minutes before a departure is not a connection.

The airport's access page links the rail and bus operators. Bus counters are split by building: a domestic bus counter on the first floor of the domestic terminal, an international transportation information counter on the first floor of the international terminal.

If the disruption extends beyond your flight, JR Hokkaido's live operation information lists suspensions and delays; it is published in Japanese. The airport's FAQ page gives a general information line on 0123-23-0111, open 7:00–23:00.

If you can still travel tonight

Check the far end before you board:

  • How you reach your hotel door from Sapporo Station. The subway and city buses have their own last services. Our Sapporo hotel-area guide compares the station area, Odori and Susukino, including how each works when you arrive on foot late.
  • Whether reception will still be open. Front desks are not universally staffed overnight and some entrances are locked. Call the property from the airport once you know your arrival time.
  • Food. The Air Terminal Hotel's late-arrival page notes that many restaurants, shops and convenience stores inside the airport close between roughly 8:30 and 10:00 p.m., with only a few places open later; hours vary by shop. Buying something before you leave the airport is usually easier than finding dinner on arrival.

Sapporo hotels, if you can get there tonight

The links below are Sapporo-area hotel searches for travellers who can still reach the city tonight. They are not individual booking or availability links for the three airport facilities compared in the next section; contact those directly.

If you cannot: where to sleep

Inside the airport. Three facilities in the terminal buildings take overnight guests: two hotels with private rooms, and the airport onsen, whose shared rest area is a paid seat rather than a bed.

Late October 2026: New Chitose Airport Onsen has announced, in its closure notice (in Japanese), that all of its facilities will close from 9:00 on 26 October 2026 until 10:00 on 28 October 2026 for inspection and equipment work, so it cannot be used on the nights of 26 and 27 October. The announcement covers the onsen only, not the terminal or the two hotels.

Facility and locationSuitsNight entry and what to confirm
Air Terminal Hotel
Domestic terminal, 3rd floor; entrances from the 1st-floor arrivals and 2nd-floor departures lobbies.
A private hotel room after a domestic arrival, without leaving the building. After the terminal closes, the 1st-floor entrance is locked: call the front desk on the intercom beside it, or use your room key. Tell the hotel if you will arrive late (hotel FAQ). A room and a late check-in still depend on availability.
Portom International Hokkaido
International terminal; reception on the 4th floor.
A private hotel room on the international terminal side, after an international arrival. Its bath is for hotel guests only, not a day-use bath. The hotel's access page gives about 12 minutes (960 m) on foot from the domestic 1st-floor arrivals, and about 10 minutes (700 m) from JR New Chitose Airport Station, as a guide only. If the indoor route is closed when you arrive, ask the hotel how to reach reception.
New Chitose Airport Onsen
Domestic terminal, 4th floor.
A bath and a paid seat in a shared relaxation room, or a separately booked twin room. Not a free bench, and the shared seat is not a private bed.Only the rooms can be reserved, not the relaxation room; rooms have no private bath. Finish shopping and meals before you go in: once admitted, you cannot go out for them. Guests with tattoos or tattoo stickers are refused (FAQ). The onsen runs 10:00 to 9:00 the next morning, last entry 7:30, separately from the terminal. After 23:30, use the 24-hour entrance lifts from the bus drop-off lane or car parks A and B (access map); the lift does not guarantee a seat. Check fees and space directly.

We name these three for their location. We have not stayed at them, inspected them or ranked them, and we have no way to see what is free on any given night — check availability and fees directly, and confirm your late arrival with the facility.

Chitose or Minami-Chitose. The airport is in Chitose, and hotels in the city are the usual fallback when rooms in the terminal are taken. Confirm each property's reception hours and how you are expected to arrive after the airport closes.

Sapporo by taxi. Possible, and sometimes reasonable for a group sharing one fare. Ask at the rank about availability and the expected fare before committing.

Rental cars are a separate arrangement

If your itinerary starts with a drive, settle this before you land. The airport's rental car information explains that the staffed rental counters are on the first floor of both terminals, and that those companies take customers by shuttle to their own offices off the airport, with returns working the same way. The page now also lists self-service rental and car-sharing options; how and when you collect depends on the company and the booking, so do not assume a 24-hour self-service pickup is open to you.

Counter hours differ by company, and a counter's listed hours are not the same as its pickup deadline or its office and shuttle hours. Ask your rental company directly what the latest pickup is for your booking, and what happens if your flight lands after it. If the pickup moves to the morning, our driving-time guide covers rebuilding a day around a later start.

The next morning

Work out what is actually at risk before changing anything.

  1. Check whether the first fixed commitment is still reachable from where you slept, with the transport running that morning.
  2. Contact the operator or property if it is not. Ask what they can move, and check the change and cancellation terms before you cancel anything — a later slot may cost nothing, while a cancellation might.
  3. Recheck the first transport leg. If the disruption was weather, it may continue into the morning.
  4. Drop one stop rather than trimming every stop. Removing a single item usually leaves the rest of the day intact.

Itineraries that start with a drive need more than a shuffled evening. Our 5-day road loop collects a rental car on arrival and sleeps in Otaru the first night; if you land too late for the handover, plan on a night near the airport or in Chitose, then pick the car up in the morning and drop the day-1 Sapporo stop. If you were travelling straight on to an onsen, the Otaru to Noboribetsu guide shows how a hotel dinner time sets the latest departure you can take.

Very early departures

The same decision applies in reverse, with more warning. If your flight leaves before the first train can reach the airport, you are choosing between an airport-area hotel the night before and an early taxi. The terminals open at 5:00 according to the airport's service page, but that is the building rather than your airline's check-in desk, so work back from the airline's own deadlines.

In winter, heavy snow can affect road and rail together, so one is not a reliable substitute for the other. Our car-free winter itinerary keeps a flexible Sapporo day before the departure day instead of scheduling a mountain transfer immediately before a flight, and the winter transport guide covers backup plans for snow days.

Common questions

Can I sleep in the terminal? Not on a public bench. The airport's service page states that you cannot stay overnight after closing except in its accommodation facilities — in practice the two hotels and the airport onsen above, each on its own terms.

What time does the airport close? On the airport's service page, checked 17 October 2026, the domestic terminal and connecting facility closed at 23:30 and the international terminal at 21:00. Times can change with delays, so confirm for your terminal and date.

Is there luggage storage if I only need a few hours? The airport lists baggage storage counters and coin lockers among its services. Their hours are not published on the FAQ page, so check before relying on them late at night.

Should I book an airport hotel for every arrival? Only when the arrival time genuinely threatens your onward connection. For a daytime landing, compare the options in the airport-to-Sapporo guide and stay where you want to be.

Checked 17 October 2026: terminal hours on Hokkaido Airports' service page, its rental car page, and the facility details and onsen closure in the comparison above, from the Air Terminal Hotel, Portom International Hokkaido and New Chitose Airport Onsen official pages linked there (Japanese). Checked 23 September 2026: the airport's access and FAQ pages (bus counters, information line, luggage storage) and the Air Terminal Hotel's late-arrival page (food). Facilities are named for their location only; we have not stayed at, inspected or ranked them, and no availability, price or arrival arrangement here is guaranteed.
