Otaru to Noboribetsu Onsen takes about 1 hour 31 minutes on the expressway by car (Otaru IC to Noboribetsu-Higashi IC), or about 2 hours of riding time by train and local bus. The train figure adds the rapid train to Sapporo (about 30–35 minutes), the limited express to Noboribetsu Station (about 1 hour 10 minutes) and the local bus up to the onsen town (roughly 14–25 minutes); transfer waits come on top. By car, add the local roads to and from the interchanges.
| Option | Time | Where you arrive |
|---|---|---|
| Car (expressway) | Otaru IC → Noboribetsu-Higashi IC about 1 hr 31 min, 137.5 km | Your hotel car park (about 6 km from the interchange) |
| Train via Sapporo | About 2 hr on trains and local bus, plus transfer waits | Noboribetsu Station, then bus or taxi to the onsen town |
| Express bus from Sapporo | Rapid train to Sapporo, then about 1 hr 40 min by bus to the Noboribetsu Onsen stop | Noboribetsu Onsen (reservation only) |
Each figure is sourced, with its check date, in the sections below.
Noboribetsu Onsen is not next to Noboribetsu Station. The local tourism association places the onsen town roughly 8 km inland from the station, so the last stretch is a bus, taxi or car journey however you travel.
That shapes the choice. By public transport you change trains, usually at Sapporo, and then cover the final stretch by road — or you take the reservation-only express bus from Sapporo, which runs into the onsen town itself. Rail information was checked on 23 September 2026, expressway figures on 3 October and Donan Bus timetables, fares and booking rules on 14 October. Confirm the services for your travel date.
Which option fits your trip?
- For a flexible departure from Otaru, take trains and a local bus. Check both the limited express connection at Sapporo and the onward bus at Noboribetsu Station.
- For fewer changes into the onsen town, reserve the express bus from Sapporo. You still take a train from Otaru to Sapporo. Secure the bus booking before planning your morning sightseeing.
- If you already have a rental car or are continuing to Lake Toya, drive. Add local roads and breaks to the expressway time, and check the route to your actual hotel.
Arrival at Noboribetsu Station is not arrival at your onsen hotel. A rail search ending at the station leaves out the local bus or taxi and the last stretch from the bus stop to your accommodation.
Leaving Otaru

Settle your luggage first. If you spend the morning around the canal, going back for a bag at your hotel or the station is a longer detour than the map suggests.
JNTO's Otaru page puts the rapid train between Sapporo and Otaru at about 30–35 minutes. That is station to station for the first leg; walking, waiting and the connection come on top.
Rail: changing at Sapporo

Sapporo is the straightforward change. The Noboribetsu tourism association puts the limited express from Sapporo to Noboribetsu Station at about 1 hour 10 minutes, on the Hokuto and Suzuran services.
Minami-Chitose is the alternative change point, and worth a look if the timetable happens to line up: some Otaru trains run through towards New Chitose Airport, and the Muroran-line limited expresses that serve Noboribetsu call at Minami-Chitose. Platforms and connection times vary by service, so check your actual trains rather than assuming a quick change.
Seats now work differently. Since 14 March 2026, limited expresses in Hokkaido run as all-reserved-seat trains. Reserve if you want a guaranteed seat. JR Hokkaido also sells a 座席未指定券 (seat-unspecified ticket), which covers the date and section without assigning a seat — conditions and price are set out on its official notice. If your information about Hokuto or Suzuran predates that change, check it again.
The last stretch from Noboribetsu Station
Noboribetsu Station sits on the coast; the onsen is uphill and inland. Donan Bus runs the 登別温泉・登別駅前線 between the station and the onsen town.
Journey time depends on the departure. On the official timetable checked on 14 October 2026, buses from 登別駅前 reached the 登別温泉 stop in roughly 14–25 minutes. That range is for those boarding and alighting points, excludes waiting time, and can change — check the departure you intend to take, and allow for the operator's note that weather and road conditions can delay arrival.
Two practical points from the same page:
- IC cards such as Kitaca and Suica are not accepted on this route. Carry cash. The adult one-way fare to 登別温泉 is ¥450.
- Visa contactless is accepted on the NA and NB services only.
A taxi from the station is the other option. Hotel pickup exists at some properties, often at fixed times and by arrangement — ask when you book rather than on arrival. The route page does not publish a luggage allowance, so raise large cases with the operator or your hotel.
The direct bus from Sapporo
Donan Bus's Sapporo departure timetable for 高速おんせん号 lists the regular departure from 札幌駅前7番 at 13:40, reaching 登別温泉 at 15:20: 1 hour 40 minutes between those stops. This was checked on 14 October 2026. The page's 1-hour-50-minute figure covers the route as a whole; your stop depends on your hotel. The adult one-way fare is ¥2,800–3,800.
- Check the service and reserve a seat for your date.
- Leave time to walk from your arriving train in Sapporo to the bus stop. Do not plan a train arrival at the bus departure time.
- Ask your hotel which stop to use; the bus also serves 登別温泉中央 and 第一滝本前, so 登別温泉 may not be the closest stop.
The service is reservation-only, and the operator requires a web booking at least two hours before the first departure of the run. For the 13:40 service above, that means 11:40, subject to availability. Travelling the same day is still possible if you book before that deadline and seats remain; what you cannot do is board without a reservation.
Driving: check the endpoints, not the map
How long is the drive? For the expressway section, NEXCO East's Drive Plaza gives 小樽 (Otaru) IC to 登別東 (Noboribetsu-Higashi) IC as about 1 hour 31 minutes and 137.5 km, via 札幌西 and the Do-O Expressway. The standard-car toll was ¥2,710 with ETC or ¥3,880 without. We ran that search on 3 October 2026 for a 10:00 departure; its congestion-adjusted time for that slot was the same. From 登別東 IC, the tourism association puts the onsen town about 6 km away by road.
Those figures are the middle of the journey, not a door-to-door time. They leave out the drive from your Otaru hotel to the interchange, parking, stops and breaks, and in winter the conditions on the day.
Put your actual departure address and your hotel's address into a road-route tool rather than measuring between two place names. A door-to-door search already covers the ordinary roads at both ends; what it leaves out is parking, stops and breaks, so add those yourself. NEXCO East's Drive Plaza covers expressway routes and tolls, and Noboribetsu is served by the Do-O Expressway at the 登別東 and 登別室蘭 interchanges — but an interchange-to-interchange figure is only the middle of the journey, and needs the local roads at both ends added to it.
Then decide where the car goes next. If you are returning it in Sapporo or at the airport, that return has to fit your departure day, and the drop-off point affects which day you give up the car. Our driving-time planning guide covers those checks; the 7-day itinerary returns the car in Sapporo before the onsen night for that reason.
Day trip or overnight?

We would plan an overnight. A day trip is possible, but the change at Sapporo, the limited express and the local bus in both directions leave a short window in the town, and the evening and early-morning baths are the part most travellers come for. That is our planning view rather than a rule — if your dates only allow a day, the route still works.
If you stay, two questions decide your afternoon:
- What time is dinner served? Ryokan meals usually run in sittings. Confirm the time when you book, then work backwards through the bus, the limited express and your checkout in Otaru.
- What is the check-in deadline? Room-only and half-board rates can differ here. Confirm with the property rather than assuming a late arrival is fine.
Jigokudani is within walking distance of the onsen town if you have daylight left after check-in.
A sequence that survives a delay
Times come from the timetables for your date; this is the order.
- Morning in Otaru — canal, one meal, nothing that cannot be cut short.
- Collect luggage and reach Otaru Station with room to spare.
- First rail leg to Sapporo, or through towards Minami-Chitose if the timetable favours it.
- Limited express to Noboribetsu Station.
- Local bus or taxi to the onsen town.
- Check in, bathe, dinner at the confirmed time.
Before leaving Otaru, decide which departure you need for step 4 and what the fallback is if you miss it. In winter, check conditions as well: JR Hokkaido publishes live operation information, and the bus operator's weather note applies to the last leg as much as the first.

Common questions
Is there a direct train from Otaru to Noboribetsu? Not on the scheduled rail network: you change at least once, most commonly at Sapporo, and you still need road transport from Noboribetsu Station.
Do I have to reserve a seat? Hokkaido's limited expresses have run as all-reserved-seat trains since 14 March 2026. Reserve for a guaranteed seat; JR Hokkaido's seat-unspecified ticket is the alternative, and its conditions are on the official notice.
Can I pay for the local bus with an IC card? No. Kitaca, Suica and similar cards are not accepted between Noboribetsu Station and the onsen. Bring cash.
How long does it take to drive from Otaru to Noboribetsu Onsen? The expressway section from 小樽 IC to 登別東 IC is about 1 hour 31 minutes (137.5 km) on NEXCO East's Drive Plaza, searched on 3 October 2026. Add the roads from your hotel to the interchange and the roughly 6 km from 登別東 IC to the onsen town, plus any stops.
How far is the onsen from the station? Around 8 km by road, per the local tourism association — a bus or taxi ride rather than a walk.
Is it easier as a day trip from Sapporo? Sapporo is the more workable base, since it removes the Otaru leg. Our day-trip comparison sets Noboribetsu against closer options.
Where this fits in a longer trip
The 7-day itinerary places a Sapporo night between Otaru and Noboribetsu; the 5-day road loop arrives from the opposite direction, driving up from Hakodate on its way back to the airport. If Otaru itself is still unsettled, start with the Otaru day-trip guide. Arriving late on your first night can push all of this back by a day — see landing late at New Chitose.
Sources checked 23 September 2026: Noboribetsu International Tourism and Convention Association, JR Hokkaido's all-reserved-seat notice, and Donan Bus's route pages for the local service and the Sapporo express bus. The expressway time, distance and tolls come from NEXCO East's Drive Plaza, searched on 3 October 2026. Route recommendations are our editorial planning judgement, not a report of a journey we timed on the ground.
Donan Bus times, fares and reservation rules were rechecked on 14 October 2026; other source dates above remain unchanged.
An airport arrival day uses a different route from this Otaru transfer. If you fly in before your onsen stay or return to the airport afterwards, compare the direct bus and rail via Minami-Chitose in our New Chitose to Noboribetsu guide.
