Choose a Shiretoko Five Lakes walk by season, available time and mobility needs. Compare the boardwalk, guided ground trails and the return journey before booking.
- The elevated boardwalk visits Lake Ichiko, not all five lakes.
- Ground-trail access changes by season; a short walk and a guided tour need different time allowances.
- Check the last entry, return transport and current closures separately.
1. Choose the route before choosing the tour
The elevated boardwalk is the simplest option if your goal is the first lake and the mountain view. The official route is about 800 metres each way, 1.6 km return and around 40 minutes. Add time for photographs, toilets and the walk from your arrival point. It is free during opening periods; transport and parking are separate costs.
The ground trails pass through forest and offer long and short loops. Choose the long loop if seeing all five lakes matters. A booking that merely says “Five Lakes” is not enough: ask which loop it covers and whether its advertised duration includes reception and the briefing. The forest photograph on this page is Lake Goko, not the view reached by the boardwalk.

2. Match the ground trail to your date
The official green-season scheme lists opening–9 May and 1 August–closing as vegetation-protection periods, when entry procedures and a briefing are required. The bear-active period, 10 May–31 July, requires a tour led by a registered guide. Check the current scheme and opening calendar for your year; these rules do not establish that the road or trail is open on a particular day.
The official FAQ estimates about 90 minutes for the long loop and 40 minutes for the short loop during vegetation-protection periods. Guided bear-season tours are listed at about three hours and one hour 45 minutes respectively. These are different products, not interchangeable estimates. Add reception, waiting and transport time; do not use a 40-minute figure to book onward transport after a guided short loop.
For a small independent party in the vegetation-protection period, the ground-trail page says a briefing reservation is unnecessary; groups of 15 or more should enquire beforehand. Guided-tour bookings are separate. Check the operator’s confirmation, language, participants, fees and cancellation conditions; submitting an enquiry is not a confirmed booking.
3. Work backwards from the return journey
Use Utoro as a possible base, then confirm the actual service to Shiretoko Five Lakes for your travel date. Reaching Utoro is not the same as reaching the Field House. The official access page links to local bus information; seasonal services and a sightseeing bus are not automatically a convenient return connection.
Write down the return departure, the walk back to the stop, your required finish time and the reception deadline, in that order. Compare the last briefing for your chosen loop with the site closing time: they are not the same deadline. If there is insufficient margin, choose the boardwalk or a shorter visit rather than rely on finishing a tour early.
A tour with pickup can be another option only after the operator confirms your accommodation, both directions and the release point. A tour reservation does not reserve a bus seat. Keep a long airport transfer off the same tightly timed day; arriving by car still requires time for parking and reception.
4. Children, wheelchairs, food and luggage
The boardwalk is step-free with gentle slopes and is described officially as wheelchair-accessible. Confirm the entire journey, including the vehicle and access from the stop, for your needs. Wheelchair availability and assistance should be checked with the Field House; the accessible boardwalk does not make the forest trails accessible.
The ground trails have no toilets or shops. Use the facilities and prepare water before the briefing, after which the walk begins. Plan meals at the Park Service Center rather than on the trail; follow its current opening arrangements and the official food and drink rules. Do not feed wildlife or bring pets onto either route.
For children or anyone unsure about the duration, ask about age requirements, footwear, wet or uneven ground and the actual route before paying. Store large luggage only where storage has been confirmed. Do not assume the Field House or a tour vehicle accepts suitcases.
5. If a route closes, change the plan rather than the rules
Ground trails can close because of bear activity or trail conditions, and a guided tour can also be interrupted. The boardwalk is separately managed and is not normally affected by bear sightings in the same way, but always check its current status too. It is not permission to enter a closed ground trail.
The boardwalk ends at the viewpoint and returns the same way. You cannot use it to enter the ground trails; the connection from the ground trails up to the boardwalk is one-way. Follow the designated direction and staff instructions.
If both the visit and transport are unsuitable, consider the Nature Center’s indoor exhibits only after checking opening and access. Ordinary green-season access is different from winter guided programmes. A snow-season photograph or an old tour listing is not evidence of independent winter access.
6. A practical booking message and final checklist
“We plan to visit on [date], staying at [hotel], with [ages and mobility needs]. Does your programme use the long or short ground loop, or only the boardwalk? What are the meeting and finish locations and times? Can you confirm return transport, the guiding language, total cost and what happens if the trail closes?”
Before departure, check the date-specific road and trail status, briefing or tour entry deadline, weather, required clothing and return service. Keep the booking confirmation and contact details offline. Your tour, accommodation and transport have separate cancellation conditions.
