Hakodate in Winter 2026: Christmas Fantasy, Night View and Weather

Winter in Hakodate centres on the Christmas Fantasy, which runs from December 1 to 25, 2026 on the water in front of the Red Brick Warehouses. Entry is free, fireworks go up at 18:00 every evening, and the city is milder and less snowy than Sapporo: the average December day reaches 3.2°C and falls to -3.6°C at night (JMA climate normals, 1991–2020).

If you want both the fireworks and the red tree, arriving before 18:00 lets you see the 18:00 fireworks and then the 18:30 red lighting.

The night view in winter

The Mount Hakodate Ropeway is closed for maintenance from October 20 to November 8, 2026. From November 9, 2026 the mountain road closes to cars for the winter (planned until April 12, 2027), and the seasonal summit bus runs only until early November, so plan your winter visit around the ropeway and check its hours for your date. Getting to Hakodate

From Sapporo, the Hokuto limited express takes about 3½–4 hours from JR Sapporo Station to JR Hakodate Station, and every seat is reserved. The reserved highway bus takes about 6 hours, and driving takes about 4 hours 20 minutes before breaks, with extra time needed in snow and ice. Planning a winter stay

These are our suggestions, not official advice.

• Stay at least one night. With 3½–4 hours each way by train, a day trip from Sapporo leaves little time for an evening event.
• Give the Christmas Fantasy one evening and the night view another, or combine them on a clear night. A cloudy evening still suits the Red Brick Warehouses.

• Book early if your dates include a December weekend, and keep a buffer on travel days in case snow delays trains.
