Sapporo to Hakodate takes about 3½–4 hours by Hokuto limited express, about 6 hours by reserved highway bus, or a long drive. Compare times, booking and costs, and plan a day trip or an overnight stay.

For most visitors, the Hokuto limited express from JR Sapporo Station to JR Hakodate Station is the simplest way to go: about 3½–4 hours, depending on the train. The reserved highway bus is slower but can cost less, and driving suits trips that continue by car. A day trip works with a few stops; stay a night to combine the night view with the next morning's market.

By train: the Hokuto limited express

The Hokuto links Sapporo and Hakodate directly, and every seat is reserved, so book before you board, especially on busy days. Regular tickets come in two parts: the basic fare and the reserved-seat limited express ticket. On a Hokkaido Rail Pass, you still need to reserve a seat.

The 3½–4 hours is station to station only; add the time to and from your hotels.

There is no Shinkansen from Sapporo yet. Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, where the Hokkaido Shinkansen ends, is a different station outside the city centre, so stay on the Hokuto to Hakodate Station.

By highway bus

Reserve Hokkaido Chuo Bus's Kosoku Hakodate-go before you travel. Online adult one-way fares listed on 16 October 2026 are ¥3,530–¥5,990; check your date and purchase channel. Some services go via New Chitose Airport. The operator lists about 5 hours 55 minutes, rounded to about 6 hours in our table; confirm your service's stops and duration.

Board at the stop on your reservation: the stop in front of Sapporo Station and the Chuo Bus Sapporo Terminal are separate places. For boarding changes at Sapporo Terminal during construction, read Hakodate Bus's latest notice (Japanese) before you leave.

By car

Hakodate's tourism office estimates about 4 hours 20 minutes via the Do-O Expressway (Sapporo-Minami IC to Onuma-Koen IC) plus local roads. Its February 2026 planning figure excludes breaks; traffic and winter can add time.

Count tolls, fuel and hotel parking. To pick up in Sapporo and return in Hakodate, check that the rental company allows it and what the one-way fee is. In winter, allow extra time for snow and ice. For other drives, see our Hokkaido drive times.

Can you do it as a day trip?

On our rough estimate, the round trip takes 7–8 hours on the train alone, not counting getting to and from the stations. You can still reach the morning market after an early train, and in winter, when it gets dark early, the night view may fit before your return. On a day trip, keep to a few stops and check your last train back before you go. To combine the evening night view with the next morning's market at an easier pace, stay a night in Hakodate.

Return to Sapporo or finish the trip in Hakodate?

Before buying a return ticket, compare two complete journeys: return to Sapporo and use your booked departure airport, or end the Hokkaido stay in Hakodate and arrange onward travel from there. A one-way route is not automatically cheaper: compare the flights or onward tickets actually available for your dates, including changes to bookings you already hold.

  1. Keep the return journey if your departure from New Chitose or your next Sapporo stay is fixed. Put the Hakodate visit earlier in the trip rather than relying on a long intercity transfer immediately before a flight. Check the full connection, not just the Hokuto arrival time.
  2. Price the one-way alternative before reserving transport. Add onward travel, airport or station transfers, any rental-car drop-off fee and the cost of cancelling existing bookings. Compare that total with the return fare and any extra Sapporo night. Use the same luggage allowance and refund conditions on both sides.
  3. Replace a night, rather than book it twice. If Hakodate replaces a Sapporo night, check the Sapporo booking's cancellation deadline first. Keeping the room as a luggage base means paying for both stays; ask about luggage storage without assuming it is free or available between separate stays.
  4. Separate the bags from the sightseeing plan. Confirm storage and collection hours at the place you actually intend to use. For a one-way trip, take your bags onward; do not leave them in Sapporo unless you have a confirmed way to retrieve them.

Write the two options as separate lines in your trip budget. For a longer route, compare the five-day itinerary before adding another city; if you keep the return journey, use the New Chitose–Sapporo transfer guide to check the airport leg too. These are booking decisions, not a guarantee that a particular flight or connection operates.

An NLH two-day car-free plan

This is an editorial planning example, not a timed tour or a record of our own visit:

  1. Day 1: Reserve your Hokuto seat and travel from Sapporo to Hakodate.
  2. Check in near the station or the bay. If you need to leave luggage before check-in, ask your hotel whether it can hold it.
  3. Walk the bay area, then have an early dinner. See our Hakodate food guide.
  4. Go up for the night view if the weather and service allow. See our Mount Hakodate night view guide for access and closures.
  5. Day 2: Breakfast at the morning market, then take the train back to Sapporo.

Where to stay in Hakodate

These are planning preferences, not hotel recommendations:

  • Near Hakodate Station: convenient for arriving by train or a bus that stops at Hakodate Station; check the hotel's address. Close to the morning market.
  • Bay area: easy for the evening walk and dinner; check the distance from the station with luggage.
  • Yunokawa Onsen: an onsen stay further from the station; allow extra transfer time.

Questions

Is there a Shinkansen from Sapporo to Hakodate?

Not yet. Take the Hokuto to Hakodate Station. Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto and Hakodate are different stations; the Hakodate Liner connects them.

Which bus stop do I use in Sapporo?

Use the stop shown on your reservation. The Sapporo Station stop and the Chuo Bus Sapporo Terminal are not the same place.

Is the bus always cheaper than the train?

Not necessarily. Bus fares change with the date and purchase method, so compare prices for your own date.
