Plan a Hokkaido winter trip for 2026–27 month by month: Niseko opens November 28, drift ice cruises start mid-January, and February 6–11, 2027 brings the Sapporo, Asahikawa and Otaru winter festivals together. Dates from official sources.

Hokkaido's 2026–27 winter runs from the end of November, when Niseko's ski areas plan to open, to the end of March, when the drift ice cruises finish. The busiest stretch for events is early February: from February 6 to 11, 2027, the Sapporo Snow Festival, the Asahikawa Winter Festival and the Otaru Snow Light Path are all on at the same time.

For a closer look at a single month, see Hokkaido in November, Hokkaido in December, Hokkaido in January and Hokkaido in February.

Late November and December: Sapporo lights up

Sapporo's winter starts with lights. According to the Sapporo Tourism Association's official site, the Sapporo White Illumination runs from November 20, 2026 to March 14, 2027. It began in 1981 in Odori Park and now uses several sites, including Odori Park, Ekimae-dori, Minami 1-jo-dori, the Kita 3-jo Plaza (Akapla) and the Sapporo Station south exit plaza; Nakajima Park is being added as a new site, with details due in late October. Each site's period and lighting hours are on the official White Illumination site.

The Munich Christmas Market in Sapporo, inspired by the Christmas market of Sapporo's sister city Munich, runs from November 20 to December 25, 2026, 11:00–21:00 (last orders 20:45), in Odori Park, per the official market page.

December: the ski season starts

Niseko United lists November 28, 2026 as the planned opening day for Grand Hirafu, Annupuri, Hanazono and Niseko Village. Night skiing runs from December 12. The cheapest adult 1-day All Mountain Pass, ¥8,800, applies in the Early Season (November 28 – December 11); from December 24 the Peak Season price is ¥13,500. How the snow builds through the month, and who each month suits, is in our Niseko month-by-month guide.

Other ski areas have announced their own dates: Furano Ski Area plans to run from November 28, 2026 to May 5, 2027, and Sapporo Teine, on the edge of Sapporo, plans to open on November 21, 2026. Both are planned dates and depend on snow.

January: drift ice season opens

The two icebreaker cruises on the Okhotsk coast start in the second half of January: the Garinko-go from Monbetsu on January 15 and the Aurora from Abashiri on January 20. Whether there is ice on a given day depends on the wind and the sea. The two operators handle a no-ice day differently: the Aurora's large ship cruises to Cape Notoro instead, while the Garinko-go still charges cancellation fees if you cancel because there is no ice. Our drift ice guide compares fares and access.

February: three winter festivals in one week

February is the month for events. The 2027 dates, from the official sites:

  • Sapporo Snow Festival: February 4–11 at Odori Park (lit until 22:00), Susukino (ice sculptures, lit until 23:00) and Tsudome (10:00–16:00). Details in our Sapporo Snow Festival guide.
  • Asahikawa Winter Festival: the 68th edition runs February 6–11, according to the festival's official site. More details are due to be announced.
  • Otaru Snow Light Path: February 6–13 in Otaru, according to the Otaru Tourism Association. The association says further details will follow.

February 6–11, 2027 is the overlap. If you want to see more than one festival, those six days let you base yourself in Sapporo and add Otaru or Asahikawa. Otaru is about 30–35 minutes from Sapporo by rapid train (JNTO), and Asahikawa about 90 minutes by limited express (Biei tourism association), as cited in our Otaru to Noboribetsu and Furano and Biei to Noboribetsu guides. For a day in Otaru itself, see our Otaru day trip guide. This is our suggestion, not an official route; check the festivals' own programmes once they are published.

The drift ice cruises are also running in February, but the Okhotsk coast is a separate trip from Sapporo. Plan it as its own stay.

March: longer days, spring skiing, last drift ice

Niseko's night skiing ends on March 22, and from March 23 the adult 1-day All Mountain Pass returns to the ¥8,800 Spring Season price (to April 4). Both drift ice cruises run until March 31. The Aurora lists a small-ship offshore route as planned for March.

April and May: the last runs

Niseko Village plans to close on April 4, Hanazono on April 11, and Grand Hirafu and Annupuri on May 5, 2027. If you want to ski late in the season, check which areas are still running before you book.

How cold it gets

In Sapporo, January averages a daily high of -0.4°C and a low of -6.4°C, and inland Asahikawa's January low averages -11.7°C (JMA normals, 1991–2020). Our Hokkaido winter weather guide compares five places month by month, with snowfall and what to wear.

Getting around in winter

Winter changes how you move. Trains between New Chitose Airport, Sapporo and Otaru are the easy part; Niseko depends on seasonal buses and booked transfers, and a late flight can break the plan. Our winter transport guide explains the options and what to do if your flight is delayed. If you have not driven on snow before, we suggest not relying on a rental car.

For a ready-made plan, our 7-day winter itinerary without a car combines Sapporo, an Otaru day trip and two nights in Niseko. For hotels, see where to stay in Sapporo and where to stay in Niseko.

For a shorter city break, use our 3-day Sapporo and Otaru itinerary without a car: two nights in Sapporo, Otaru on day two and the departure day close to your hotel, with a winter version and a bad-weather alternative.
