Hokkaido in February 2027: the Sapporo Snow Festival (Feb 4–11), Asahikawa Winter Festival (Feb 6–11) and Otaru Snow Light Path (Feb 6–13) overlap, drift ice cruises are running, and Sapporo averages 0.4°C by day and -6.2°C at night.

February is festival month in Hokkaido. In 2027 the Sapporo Snow Festival runs February 4–11, the Asahikawa Winter Festival February 6–11 and the Otaru Snow Light Path February 6–13, so all three are on from February 6 to 11. The drift ice cruises on the Okhotsk coast are running, and the snow on the ground is usually at its deepest: in Sapporo, February averages a high of 0.4°C and a low of -6.2°C (JMA climate normals, 1991–2020).

The three festivals

  • Sapporo Snow Festival (February 4–11): five large snow sculptures in Odori Park, ice sculptures in Susukino, and snow play for families at Tsudome. Hours, sites and how to plan the days are in our Sapporo Snow Festival 2027 guide.
  • Asahikawa Winter Festival (February 6–11): the 68th edition, according to the festival's official site, which says more details will follow.
  • Otaru Snow Light Path (February 6–13): dates announced by the Otaru Tourism Association, with details to follow.

With a Sapporo base, Otaru is about 30–35 minutes by rapid train (JNTO) and Asahikawa about 90 minutes by limited express (Biei tourism association), as cited in our Otaru to Noboribetsu and Furano and Biei to Noboribetsu guides. Combining festivals during February 6–11 is our suggestion, not an official route.

How many days for February festivals?

Treat the festival calendar as a choice of dates, not a checklist of places to visit. The following are our suggested allocations, not official tours or guaranteed connections. Check each venue's programme and your return transport before booking.

  • Two nights / three days: keep a Sapporo base, give the full middle day to the festival, and use the arrival and departure days only as flight times allow. If Otaru is the priority, replace part of the Sapporo plan rather than adding it after a full day outdoors. The three-day Sapporo and Otaru route is a starting framework, not a promise that its usual stops fit around festival visits.
  • Four nights / five days: keep one full day for Sapporo and a separate day for Otaru, with another day flexible for weather or rest. Choose Asahikawa instead of that flexible day only if the outward and return services leave enough time at the venue; do not treat the station-to-station train time as the whole excursion.
  • Six nights / seven days: use the car-free winter itinerary to compare overnight bases, then replace its sightseeing stops with your chosen festivals. Adding an Okhotsk stay for drift ice means removing other nights and checking the onward route, not simply adding a cruise to a Sapporo day.

Work backwards from the return journey. Write down the train or bus you intend to use, a fallback departure, travel from the venue to the station, and any luggage collection. That gives you a latest time to leave the event. Do not use the final service as your only plan, or assume a festival's closing time leaves a connection home.

For children, choose one main outdoor visit at a time and identify a warm break and a shorter return option before setting out; the family planning guide covers the hotel and transport questions. Compare the actual room total for your dates, transport and cancellation conditions in the trip budget guide, rather than assuming that a longer stay outside Sapporo will cost less.

February weather: deepest snow of the season

StationAverage high / lowSnowfallDeepest snow
Sapporo0.4 / -6.2°C116 cm95 cm
Asahikawa-1.7 / -11.8°C97 cm84 cm
Kutchan (Niseko area)-1.0 / -9.4°C187 cm181 cm
Abashiri-2.0 / -9.6°C69 cm58 cm
Hakodate1.8 / -5.7°C74 cm41 cm

Less snow falls in February than in January in most places, but it piles up, so Sapporo, Asahikawa and Kutchan usually see their deepest snow of the winter this month. Asahikawa's February nights average -11.8°C, the coldest figure in our winter weather guide, so dress for the Asahikawa festival accordingly.

Drift ice in February

Both icebreakers run through February. On Abashiri's Aurora, February is the most expensive month on the large ship, at ¥6,000 for adults (¥5,000 in January and March); without ice, it cruises to Cape Notoro instead. Monbetsu's Garinko-go runs daily, and its cancellation fees apply even when there is no ice. Details in our drift ice guide.

Planning tips for February

These are our suggestions, not official advice.

  • Book Sapporo hotels first. The Snow Festival brings many visitors into the city in the same few days; our where to stay in Sapporo guide compares areas.
  • Treat the Okhotsk coast as a separate stay. Drift ice and the Sapporo festival do not fit in one day; give the coast two nights for a second chance at the ice.
  • Skiing? Niseko's Peak Season pricing (¥13,500 for an adult 1-day All Mountain Pass) runs to February 28; see our Niseko month-by-month guide.
  • Leave slack on travel days. Snow and wind can delay transport; see our winter transport guide.

The rest of the season is in Hokkaido in December, Hokkaido in January and our Hokkaido in winter guide.
