Kutchan is the real address of 'Niseko' powder: Grand Hirafu sits here under Mt. Yotei. Some of the world's lightest snow, and the après scene to match.
Kutchan is the administrative centre of Shiribeshi and the town that actually contains Grand Hirafu and Hanazono, the ski areas the world knows as Niseko. It faces Mt. Yotei across the Shiribetsu valley, and the snow that falls between the two mountains is among the lightest anywhere. Away from the resort strip it is a working town of potato farmers with a market street, a summer potato festival and a museum of local life. Skiers with a taste for nightlife, and travellers who want a real town near the resorts, base here.

What to see in Kutchan
Grand Hirafu and Hanazono
グラン・ヒラフと花園
The two largest of the Niseko ski areas share the eastern face of Annupuri, with tree skiing, night skiing and an international après scene at the base. Both are in Kutchan, not Niseko town.
Hangetsu Lake
半月湖
A crescent-shaped crater lake in the forest at the foot of Mt. Yotei, reached by a short trail from the Hirafu trailhead. Still, dark water under the volcano, and almost always empty of people.
Kutchan Fudokan
倶知安風土館
The town museum of natural and local history, with exhibits on Yotei's geology, the region's snow and the farming settlers, in a building with the mountain framed in its windows.
Kutchan Potato Festival
くっちゃんじゃが祭り
The town's summer festival in August, built around its potato harvest, with a street parade and fireworks. The most local thing you can do in the Niseko area.
Getting to Kutchan
Routes 5 and 276 meet in town. Sapporo is about two hours by car and New Chitose Airport about two and a half, with direct winter buses from the airport to Hirafu. JR Kutchan station is on the Hakodate Main Line's mountain section, still running but scheduled to close after the Shinkansen extension; a Hokkaido Shinkansen station is planned for Kutchan itself.
Shiribeshi region: JR links New Chitose Airport and Sapporo with Otaru. For Niseko, choose your hotel first, then a seasonal airport bus or JR with a local transfer. For Cape Kamui, change at Bikuni to the town bus and check whether it serves your stop on your date.
When to visit Kutchan
December to March is the reason the town exists on the world map, with January and February the deepest and busiest. June to September is green, cool and half-empty, with Yotei climbs, cycling and the August potato festival. October gives colour and empty lifts before the snow.
What to eat in Kutchan
The potato is Kutchan's crop and its identity, from baked potatoes with butter to gosetsu udon, chewy noodles made with potato starch that the town invented. The resort brings in ramen, sushi and international kitchens; the farmland brings dairy, asparagus and Yotei spring water.

Shiribeshi is a region of western Hokkaido made up of 20 municipalities, from Otaru and Yoichi on the coast to Kutchan and Niseko inland. In winter, Niseko and Kutchan are bases for skiing within sight of Mt. Yotei. In any season, Otaru's canal, stone warehouses and sushi counters make a day trip from Sapporo.
