This guide covers the wider Ishikari region, which includes Sapporo and Chitose, home to New Chitose Airport. Ishikari City, on the northern coast, is one of its eight municipalities; if that is where you are heading, use the Ishikari City page.
Beyond central Sapporo, Lake Shikotsu in Chitose suits a lakeshore stay, and Jozankei Onsen, within Sapporo city, suits a hot-spring night. Kitahiroshima is home to ES CON FIELD HOKKAIDO. Choose the place first, then check how to get there.
🧭 New Chitose Airport and JR Sapporo Station are the main gateways. Lake Shikotsu, Jozankei and the Ishikari City coast each need their own onward bus or car journey.
Where is Ishikari? Choosing between Ishikari City, Sapporo, Lake Shikotsu and Jozankei
Ishikari can refer to the coastal city or the wider region around Sapporo. This page covers the region, in central-western Hokkaido, which is made up of eight municipalities: six cities, one town and one village. They are Sapporo, Ebetsu, Chitose, Eniwa, Kitahiroshima, Ishikari City, Tobetsu and Shinshinotsu. Reaching the Ishikari City coast without a car
Ishikari City Hall is not at the park or the shore. The city's park page currently describes a bus from Sapporo Terminal to the Ishikari Chosha-mae (city hall) stop, then the reservation-based Honcho–Hanakawa on-demand service to the Ishikari stop, then a walk of about 20 minutes. The city's route page (updated 28 September 2026) says this service needs an advance reservation and runs Monday to Saturday, not on Sundays, public holidays or 29 December–3 January; check the official page around the New Year. At city hall the two services board at different places, so check the official map rather than expecting the same stop. Connections are not guaranteed. Where to stay and how to plan a day
You do not need all four places in one day. Pair Sapporo's food with one chosen trip: the coast, Lake Shikotsu or Jozankei. Stay around Sapporo Station or Odori for restaurants and transport, in Jozankei for an onsen night, or by Lake Shikotsu for a quiet lakeside stay once you have checked the bus or pickup. A hotel in central Chitose or at the airport is not a lakeside hotel. For an early flight, check the first train or bus and any hotel shuttle before assuming the nearest-looking hotel is easiest.
