Ishikari gave its name to Hokkaido's great river and to ishikari-nabe, the salmon miso hotpot. Dune roses bloom at the river mouth in summer.
Ishikari stretches along the coast north of Sapporo from the mouth of the Ishikari River, Hokkaido's longest, up to the fishing villages of Atsuta and Hamamasu at the foot of the coastal hills. The river gave the plain its name and the town gave Japan ishikari-nabe, the salmon and miso hotpot. Its old centre grew on salmon fishing and later on herring, and the northern coast still feels like that older Hokkaido. Sandy beaches and dune roses draw Sapporo residents in summer; the coast road on Route 231 draws drivers heading for Rumoi.

Hamanasu-no-Oka Park
はまなすの丘公園
The sand spit at the river mouth, covered in wild dune roses that bloom pink in June and July, with a red-and-white lighthouse and a boardwalk out to where the river meets the sea. Sea eagles overhead in winter.
Atsuta coast and its roadside station
厚田の海岸と道の駅
A former herring port under coastal cliffs, now a stop on the Route 231 coast road. The roadside station on the hill has a sea-facing deck, and the sunsets into the Japan Sea are the reason locals drive out here.
Hamamasu
浜益
The northernmost district, a fishing village with a wide beach, backed by hills, where the mountains drop straight into the sea toward the Rumoi border. The most remote-feeling place within an hour and a half of Sapporo.
Ishikari Beach
石狩浜
The long sandy beach south of the river mouth, the closest real sea-swimming beach to Sapporo. Summer brings swimmers and beach houses; the rest of the year it is empty sand, driftwood and wind.
Getting to Ishikari
There is no railway in Ishikari; buses from Sapporo reach the city centre in about an hour, and the centre is roughly 40 minutes from Sapporo by car on Route 231 or 337. New Chitose Airport is about an hour and a half away. Route 231 continues north along the coast through Atsuta and Hamamasu to Mashike and Rumoi, so many visitors pass through on that drive.

When to visit Ishikari
June and July for the dune roses at the river mouth, July and August for the beaches, and September for the salmon festival when the river run begins. October brings salmon roe season. Winter shuts the beaches, but the coast road stays open and the empty shoreline has its own severe appeal.
What to eat in Ishikari
Ishikari-nabe, salmon simmered with vegetables in miso broth, was born here and is served all over town. Autumn salmon and roe come from the river, and the northern coast lands herring in spring, plus shrimp, octopus and sea urchin in season. Farms on the plain grow rice and vegetables, and the Hamamasu hills have small orchards.
