The ski season opens at the end of November, Sapporo is lit up for the White Illumination, and the Munich Christmas Market runs in Odori Park until December 25.

Skiing in December

Niseko United plans to open Grand Hirafu, Annupuri, Hanazono and Niseko Village on November 28, 2026, and Furano Ski Area plans to open the same day and run to May 5, 2027. Sapporo Teine, on the edge of Sapporo, plans to open on November 21.
Early December lift passes cost less than the Christmas peak, but this is not the cheapest period of the entire ski season. The adult 1-day All Mountain Pass is ¥8,800 in the Early Season (November 28 – December 11) and ¥12,600 in the Regular Season (December 12–23), rising to ¥13,500 in the Peak Season from December 24. Terrain opens progressively through the month, so early December is a trade between price and how much of the mountain is running. Our Niseko month-by-month guide explains the difference between early and late December.
Christmas in Sapporo
The Sapporo White Illumination runs from November 20, 2026, across Odori Park, Ekimae-dori, Minami 1-jo-dori, the Kita 3-jo Plaza (Akapla) and the Sapporo Station south exit plaza, with Nakajima Park added as a new site this year. Each site has its own period and lighting hours, so check the official White Illumination site for the area you want to see.
The Munich Christmas Market in Sapporo, inspired by the market of Sapporo's sister city Munich, runs in Odori Park from November 20 to December 25, 2026, 11:00–21:00 (last orders 20:45), per the official market page. Both are in central Sapporo, so they fit easily into an evening after a day trip.
At Hoshino Resorts Tomamu, the Ice Village is planned to open from December 20, 2026 to March 10, 2027, according to the resort's winter site.
Planning tips for December
These are our suggestions, not official advice.
- Late December fills up. Niseko's Peak Season pricing begins on December 24, and the holiday weeks are the busiest at the resorts. Book accommodation and transfers early if your dates include Christmas or New Year.
- Early December suits flexible skiers. If cheaper lift passes matter more than having every run open, the first half of the month is worth a look.
- Expect snow on the ground and slippery pavements. Pack waterproof boots with grip and layers; see what to wear in our weather guide.
- Leave slack on travel days. Snow can delay trains, buses and flights. Our winter transport guide explains what to do if your flight is late.

Choose a December route before booking hotels
Three days, mainly sightseeing: stay in Sapporo and use the Sapporo–Otaru three-day plan. Check the illumination dates for the specific site, keep outdoor walking in the daylight and leave room for a warm indoor stop. The Christmas Market ends on December 25; a New Year trip needs a different evening plan.
Five days, cities and onsen: use the car-free option in our five-day itinerary, rather than applying the summer road-trip timetable to snowy roads. Check the onward bus from Noboribetsu Station and your ryokan's dinner deadline before choosing the train. Keep the return to the airport separate from an ambitious sightseeing day.
Seven days, including Niseko: our car-free winter itinerary allocates four nights to Sapporo and two to Niseko, with just one full resort day. It depends on a bookable seasonal transfer and hotel connection. If skiing is the priority, allow more resort nights instead of adding destinations. Check Niseko's season and lift-pass periods against your exact dates.
Before paying for accommodation, compare Sapporo hotel areas, confirm the airport connection and use the winter packing checklist. For December 29–January 3, verify each restaurant, attraction and transport operator's holiday arrangements directly; a normal weekly opening schedule is not a holiday guarantee.
