A Hokkaido winter trip without skis: compare snow play at Takino, Sapporo food and indoor days, a Jozankei day-use bath and an optional Asahiyama Zoo extension, with a car-free Sapporo-based 3-night plan, swaps for bad weather and checks before each outing.

You can enjoy a Hokkaido winter without skiing: snow play, hot springs and walks around town fill the days. Add warming food in the city and an evening stroll through snowy streets, and you have a full trip. For a first short visit, a single base in Sapporo works best: you avoid packing up every day, and you can swap outings when the weather changes. Plan one main outing for each full day rather than chaining several together. If Hakodate is your goal, see the Hakodate-base alternative further down.

Opening, operation and snow cover change from year to year, so check the official pages linked below before each outing. Official activity and access pages checked 19 October 2026.

Four ways to spend a day without skis

Each of these can be the main outing of a day. Allow for travel and breaks rather than packing the day. They aren't ranked; pick the one that suits your group, the forecast and how far you want to travel.

Snow play at Takino Suzuran Hillside Park

Takino Suzuran Hillside Park is a large park in the south of Sapporo. The Sapporo tourism listing (in Japanese) describes winter tubing, snowshoe walks and snow play for small children, and notes that operation depends on conditions. The park's own pages for snowshoeing and sledding are the place to confirm details for your date.

Before you go, check on the official park site:

  • whether the winter season and the activity you want are running on your date;
  • which area of the park it uses, what equipment is provided or needed, and any age, height or participation conditions;
  • the charges for entry, the activity and any rental, and whether your chosen activity needs a ticket.

The park is large. Work out which entrance and zone serves your chosen activity and how you will get back from that same point before you leave the hotel; use the park's access information for your date rather than a route from another season.

If there isn't enough snow, or the activity is closed, switch to indoor venues in central Sapporo rather than heading for another park on the off chance it is open.

A Jozankei day-use bath

Jozankei Onsen is a hot-spring town in the mountains of Sapporo's Minami Ward. Start by choosing an actual bath, from the tourism association's day-use list (in Japanese) or our Jozankei Onsen guide, then check its day-use reception hours on your date, whether towels are included, any conditions for children, and whether you can eat there.

From central Sapporo, the official access page (in Japanese) lists a direct bus, or the subway to Makomanai followed by a bus. Before you get in the bath, decide which bus you will take back and confirm its time on the operator's timetable for that day.

Sapporo food and indoor days

Start with a warming lunch from our Sapporo food guide, then pick one indoor venue from the rainy-day guide; its ideas help on snowy days too, but check the venue's opening and how you'll get there first. Underground walkways in the centre cut down the time you spend outside, but they don't reach every hotel door.

If your dates overlap a winter festival, use the dates in our winter festivals guide and Sapporo Snow Festival guide, and book your hotel early.

A suggested 3-night, 4-day plan from Sapporo

An NLH editorial suggestion. Keep the same Sapporo hotel for all three nights.

  • Day 1: arrival. Check in and stay in central Sapporo for dinner and an evening walk. Don't plan an outing after the flight.
  • Day 2: snow play or the city. If Takino's activity is open and the snow is good, make it your one outing. If not, have lunch and visit indoor venues in central Sapporo.
  • Day 3: Otaru or Jozankei. Choose one. Walk the canal and Sakaimachi Street with our Otaru day-trip guide, or spend the day at a Jozankei bath. Doing both makes for a rushed day.
  • Day 4: departure. Stay in Sapporo or near New Chitose Airport and keep the morning free of anything far away. Our winter transport guide explains how delays are announced.

If Day 2 and Day 3 have very different forecasts, swap them. If neither day suits an outdoor plan, spend both in the city.

Asahiyama Zoo and drift ice: give them their own time

Asahiyama Zoo in Asahikawa isn't something to add on top of Otaru or Jozankei on Day 3. Give it a separate full day, or add a night in Asahikawa and compare the two with our winter zoo guide and Asahikawa hotel guide. The zoo's official FAQ (in Japanese) explains that the penguin walk needs enough snow to make its course; check the zoo's announcement for the current season rather than last winter's dates.

Drift ice is on the Okhotsk coast, far from Sapporo, so it isn't a quick swap for a snow day. Treat it as a separate coastal stay and plan it with our drift ice guide.

If Hakodate is your goal

Don't add Hakodate to this 3-night Sapporo plan. Plan a separate trip with nights in Hakodate instead, using our Hakodate in winter guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hokkaido worth visiting in winter if I don't ski? Yes. Snow play, onsen, food and festival evenings fill a trip without any ski equipment. Our month-by-month winter guide shows what each month offers.

Do I need a car? Not for central Sapporo, Otaru or Jozankei, which this plan reaches by train, subway or bus. Choose Takino only if public transport there and back, as shown in the park's access information, fits your activity and date; otherwise make it a city day. Driving on snow and ice is a separate decision.

When can I do snow play? Only when the operator says the activity is running. Snow arrives at different times each year, so check the park's own information instead of relying on a particular month.

I'm travelling with skiers. How do we plan? Agree in advance where and when you'll meet, and how each person gets back to the hotel. If a non-skier wants to ride a lift for the view, ask the ski area whether that lift is suitable for people without skis and what ticket it needs. Our family-trip guide helps with children's rest and meal breaks.

Practical planning: stays, clothing, budget and backup

Choose a hotel near a subway station using where to stay in Sapporo, so a snowy morning still starts with a short walk.

Dress for how long you'll be outdoors and for what your chosen activity advises, using the winter packing list and the winter weather guide. Compare costs with the Hokkaido budget worksheet. For more ideas by season and region, browse the Hokkaido activity guides.
