Tomari village keeps herring-boom mansions on a sheltered cove of the Shakotan sea — tiny, salty and proud.
Tomari is a small village on the western base of the Shakotan Peninsula, strung along a few coves north of Iwanai. The herring boom of a century ago left it a restored fishing-master's mansion, and coal mining in the hills behind added a second chapter. Today it is known for the hot-spring village of Sakazuki, a swimming beach with an offshore islet, and a coastline that starts to turn Shakotan blue. It suits drivers working up Route 229 who want a quiet stop and a bath before the wild coast begins.

Nishin Goten Tomari
鰊御殿とまり
A restored herring baron's residence and fishermen's quarters on the shore, run by the village, showing how the boom years worked from the inside: the bunk rooms, the nets and the owner's tatami rooms.
Sakazuki Onsen and beach
盃温泉と盃海水浴場
A small hot-spring hamlet in a cove at the village's north end, with a sheltered swimming beach and the islet of Benten-jima just offshore. The water here is already the clear turquoise of Shakotan.
Kayanuma coal-mine remains
茅沼炭鉱跡
Hokkaido's first coal mine opened in the hills behind Tomari in the 1850s, sending coal down to the coast. Little remains but the story matters, and the valley is a quiet walk.
Getting to Tomari
Route 229 is the only road, about 20 minutes north of Iwanai and continuing on to Kamoenai and Shakotan. No railway; the nearest station is Kutchan, roughly 50 minutes away on the line that is due to close after the Shinkansen extension. Sapporo is about two and a half hours by car, New Chitose Airport around three.
Shiribeshi region: JR links New Chitose Airport and Sapporo with Otaru. For Niseko, choose your hotel first, then a seasonal airport bus or JR with a local transfer. For Cape Kamui, change at Bikuni to the town bus and check whether it serves your stop on your date.
When to visit Tomari
July and August, when the beach opens, the sea is calm and the sea-urchin boats are out. June for the first uni and green headlands. The coast road stays open in winter but the village goes quiet under the Sea of Japan wind.
What to eat in Tomari
Sea urchin is the summer currency, eaten raw over rice, with abalone and flounder from the same rocky shore. Atka mackerel and squid fill the other seasons, and herring, the fish that built the village, still turns up dried, marinated and in soba.

Shiribeshi is a region of western Hokkaido made up of 20 municipalities, from Otaru and Yoichi on the coast to Kutchan and Niseko inland. In winter, Niseko and Kutchan are bases for skiing within sight of Mt. Yotei. In any season, Otaru's canal, stone warehouses and sushi counters make a day trip from Sapporo.
