Rusutsu is Hokkaido's big playground — a three-mountain ski resort famous for tree runs, plus the island's largest amusement park in summer.
Rusutsu is a farming village on the plateau south of Mt. Yotei that happens to contain one of Hokkaido's largest resorts. Three linked ski mountains give it tree runs and powder that rival Niseko with fewer people, and in summer the same site runs the island's biggest amusement park. Around the resort, potato and daikon fields roll towards Lake Toya. Families come for the rides, skiers for the trees, and drivers on Route 230 stop for the roadside station and the view of Yotei from the south.

Rusutsu Resort ski area

West, East and Isola mountains linked by lifts and a gondola, with long groomed runs and some of the best tree skiing in Hokkaido. Lift queues are short even in peak season.
The summer amusement park

From spring to autumn the resort's amusement park opens with roller coasters and rides for small children, the largest of its kind in Hokkaido and a fixture of family summers in the region.
Michi-no-Eki 230 Rusutsu
道の駅230ルスツ
The roadside station on Route 230 is the village's farm stand, piled with potatoes and vegetables in late summer, with Mt. Yotei's southern face straight across the road.
Mt. Shiribetsu
尻別岳
The smaller peak beside Yotei, a half-day climb from the village side with a summit view that takes in Yotei, Lake Toya and Uchiura Bay in one turn.
Getting to Rusutsu
Route 230 from Sapporo crosses Nakayama Pass and reaches the village in about an hour and a half to two hours. From New Chitose Airport it is roughly the same via Route 276 and Kimobetsu. Nearest rail is Toya station on the Muroran Main Line, about 40 minutes south, where Sapporo–Hakodate expresses stop. Winter buses link the resort with Sapporo and the airport.
Shiribeshi region: Otaru is 40 minutes from Sapporo by train; Niseko is about 2 hours by car or winter bus. Shakotan needs a car.
When to visit Rusutsu
December to March for powder and tree runs, January and February deepest. July and August for the amusement park and cool highland air. September is potato harvest, when the roadside station and the village's autumn stalls are at their fullest.
What to eat in Rusutsu
Potatoes are the crop, grown on volcanic soil at altitude and sold fresh, as croquettes and fried snacks. Daikon, carrots and asparagus follow the seasons, and the village's pork is a regional brand. Milk and ice cream from the surrounding dairy farms round it out.
