Date was settled by a samurai clan from Sendai and enjoys Hokkaido's mildest weather — locals call it the island's Shonan coast.
Date sits on the shore of Volcano Bay between Muroran and Lake Toya, and its name is a clan name: samurai from the Sendai domain's Watari branch sailed here in 1870 and built the town as a settler colony. The climate is the mildest in Hokkaido, snow is light, and vegetable fields run right down to the sea, which is why locals call it the Shonan of the north. Mt. Usu smokes on the town's edge and the Otaki district inland adds mountain hot springs. It suits slow travelers who want history, produce and volcano views without crowds.

What to see in Date
Date History and Culture Museum
だて歴史文化ミュージアム
The city museum tells the story of the Watari samurai who settled here, with armor, swords and the founding family's belongings, and sits inside a park of old settler-era trees and a former clan residence.
Kitakogane Shell Midden
北黄金貝塚
A Jomon-period shell mound and settlement site on a hill above the bay, part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing of prehistoric sites in northern Japan. Reconstructed pit houses, a visitor centre and a lot of open grass.
Mt. Usu and Usu Zenkoji
有珠山と有珠善光寺
The volcano on the town's western edge has erupted four times since 1910, and its slopes drop to Usu Bay. At its foot stands Usu Zenkoji, one of the three oldest temples in Hokkaido, with a garden known for spring blossoms.
Kitayuzawa Onsen (Otaki)
北湯沢温泉（大滝）
In the mountain district of Otaki, along Route 276 towards Lake Shikotsu, hot-spring inns line the Choryu River, and the Sankai Falls tumble in three steps nearby. A different, forested Date from the coast.
Getting to Date
Date-Mombetsu station on the JR Muroran Main Line is a limited-express stop, roughly 1.5 hours from Sapporo. By car, New Chitose Airport is about 1.5 hours and Sapporo about two hours via the Do-o Expressway's Date exit; Route 37 runs along the coast and Route 453 comes down from the Otaki hills.
Iburi region: Plan rail journeys to Shiraoi, Noboribetsu or Toya, then check the final local connection. Noboribetsu Station is not in the hot-spring town, and Toya Station is not on the Toyako Onsen lakefront. Check bus or hotel pickup times before booking accommodation; a rail journey alone does not get you to the ryokan door.
When to visit Date
April to October is the long, gentle growing season, with fruit-tree blossoms in May and vegetable stands from June. August brings the Date Warrior Festival, when the settler history parades through town in armor. Winters are the mildest in Hokkaido, so this is a fine base even in January.
What to eat in Date
Vegetables are the pride: the mild climate gives Date an early season for asparagus, tomatoes, beans and Chinese yams, sold at farm stands along Route 37. Volcano Bay supplies scallops and flounder, and the Otaki hills add forest mushrooms.
