Niki is orchard country — cherries, prunes and grapes ripening into one of Hokkaido's most exciting new wine scenes.
Niki fills the Yoichi River valley just inland from the coast, and it is orchard country from end to end: cherries in early summer, then prunes, grapes and apples through autumn. The same slopes now carry wine grapes, and the town has become one of the most watched new wine areas in Japan. There is no big sight here, only farm gates, pick-your-own signs and a hilltop fruit park with the whole valley below. It suits people who eat by the season and want a green stop between Otaru and Niseko.

What to see in Niki
Fruit Park Niki
フルーツパークにき
A town-run park on a hill above the orchards with a lookout over the valley to the Yoichi coast, a fruit shop, and trees you can pick from in season. The best single view of what the town does.
Cherry-picking season
さくらんぼ狩り
From late June to July the orchards along the valley open for picking, and Niki has more cherry trees than anywhere else in Hokkaido. Roadside stands sell the surplus by the box.
The vineyard slopes
ワインぶどうの斜面
Wine grapes have taken over the south-facing hills in the last two decades, and small wineries dot the town. Visit in October when the harvest is in and the leaves turn red.
Getting to Niki
Route 5 runs through the valley, about 40 minutes from Otaru and an hour and a half from Sapporo by car; the Inaho Pass carries it on to Kyowa and Kutchan. JR Niki station is on the Hakodate Main Line's Otaru–Oshamambe section, which still runs but is scheduled to close after the Shinkansen extension. New Chitose Airport is about two hours.
Shiribeshi region: Otaru is 40 minutes from Sapporo by train; Niseko is about 2 hours by car or winter bus. Shakotan needs a car.
When to visit Niki
Late June to July for cherries, the town's signature harvest. August for prunes and peaches, September to October for grapes, apples and the wine harvest, when the valley is at its most colourful. Winter is snow and pruning, with nothing open in the orchards.
What to eat in Niki
Fruit in every form: cherries, prunes, grapes, apples and peaches sold at the gate, made into juice and jam, and increasingly into wine from the town's own vineyards. Tomatoes and rice grow on the valley floor, and Yoichi's fish is ten minutes away.

Shiribeshi packs three world-class reasons to visit into one compact peninsula. In winter, Niseko's legendary powder falls beneath the perfect cone of Mt. Yotei, drawing skiers from every continent. Year-round, Otaru's canal glows under gas lamps, its herring-boom mansions and sushi counters an easy trip from Sapporo.
