Monbetsu sends the Garinko icebreaker crunching through the pack ice all winter; a giant crab-claw sculpture guards the harbor.
Monbetsu is the northern of the two drift-ice ports on the Okhotsk coast, a fishing and shipping town with its own airport and no railway. The Garinko icebreakers, with their drill-like screws, have sailed into the ice from here for decades, and the harbor front has been built up around the ice: a seal rescue centre, an observation tower that goes below the waterline and a giant crab-claw sculpture on the shore. Quieter than Abashiri, and closer to the wild northern coast.

What to see in Monbetsu
Garinko icebreaker
流氷砕氷船ガリンコ号
The town's own icebreaker, which drills into the pack ice with huge screws on its bow. Sailings run through the drift-ice months from the harbor; outside winter it makes fishing and sightseeing trips.
Okhotsk Tower
オホーツクタワー
An observation tower standing in the sea at the end of the breakwater, with a viewing floor above and windows below the waterline where you look out into the water, and in winter the underside of the ice.
Seal centre
とっかりセンター
A city-run facility on the harbor that rescues injured seals from the Okhotsk and keeps a resident group in outdoor pools. Feeding times are the moment to be there.
Lake Komuke
コムケ湖
A brackish lagoon south of town separated from the sea by a sand bar, with wetlands that draw migrating birds in spring and autumn and glasswort colour in September.
Getting to Monbetsu
Monbetsu has its own airport with flights from Tokyo, about 15 minutes from the centre. There is no railway; the nearest stations are at Engaru on the Sekihoku Main Line, about an hour away. By road, Route 273 comes over from Asahikawa in about three hours, and Sapporo is roughly four and a half hours.
Okhotsk region: Fly into Memanbetsu Airport for Abashiri and Shiretoko's west side; drift-ice season adds special trains and buses.
When to visit Monbetsu
Late January to early March for the ice, when the Garinko sails and the harbor front comes alive. May and June for the crab season, and summer for the lagoons and the coast road north. The town is small enough that winter is the real reason to come.
What to eat in Monbetsu
Hairy crab is the symbol, hence the claw on the shore, with the spring season the best. Scallops from the offshore beds are large and cheap here, and autumn brings salmon and salmon roe. Dairy from the hills behind town rounds it out.
