Abashiri means two icons: the historic prison museum and winter's drift-ice cruises — with a lake that turns coral-red with glasswort each autumn.
Abashiri sits where the Abashiri River meets the Sea of Okhotsk, and its name still carries the weight of the frontier prison whose convicts built the region's roads. The preserved prison is now the best-known museum in eastern Hokkaido, and in winter the town is one of two ports where icebreakers sail into the drift ice. Between those two icons there is a quiet coast of lakes, capes and prehistoric sites. Good for a two-night stay that mixes history, sea food and, in the right months, ice.

What to see in Abashiri
Abashiri Prison Museum
博物館網走監獄
The original Meiji-era prison buildings moved to the foot of Mt. Tento and opened as an outdoor museum. The radial cell blocks and the story of forced road-building are the point; allow a couple of hours.
Drift-ice cruises
流氷観光砕氷船
From late January into March an icebreaker leaves Abashiri port and pushes through the pack ice, with seals and sea eagles on the floes on good days. Whether the ice is actually in shore depends on the wind.
Mt. Tento museums
天都山の博物館群
The hill above town holds the Okhotsk Ryu-hyo Museum, where you can touch real drift ice year-round, and the prefectural Museum of Northern Peoples on the cultures of the whole northern rim.
Glasswort at Lake Notoro
能取湖のサンゴ草
In September the mudflats at Ubaranai on Lake Notoro turn crimson with glasswort, one of the largest such colonies in Japan. Boardwalks run out over the red.
Getting to Abashiri
Memanbetsu Airport is about 30 minutes by car. Abashiri station is the end of the JR Sekihoku Main Line from Sapporo and Asahikawa, and the start of the Senmo Line toward Shiretoko and Kushiro. By road, Route 39 from Asahikawa and Kitami; Sapporo is roughly five hours away.

When to visit Abashiri
February is the safest bet for drift ice, with late January and early March as the margins. September brings the red glasswort at Lake Notoro. June to August is comfortable for the capes and lakes, and the prison museum works in any month.
What to eat in Abashiri
The port lands crab, scallops and whitefish, and salmon runs the Abashiri River in autumn. Kelp and sea urchin come off the rocky capes. Inland the farms grow wheat and sugar beet, and the town's own drift-ice-themed beers and sweets are the standard souvenir.
