Shibetsu (the Nemuro one) is salmon town — a dedicated salmon science park, autumn runs, and some of Japan's best ikura.
Shibetsu is a fishing town on the Nemuro Strait, north of Betsukai and south of Rausu, with Kunashiri Island filling the horizon offshore. The Shibetsu river runs through it, and every autumn salmon crowd up the river in numbers you can watch from a bridge. People have fished here for thousands of years: the riverbank at Lake Po holds one of the densest concentrations of pit-dwelling sites in Japan. It is a town for eating salmon and roe at their source and for seeing where the region's history starts.

Shibetsu Salmon Science Park
標津サーモン科学館
A public aquarium and museum on the Shibetsu river devoted entirely to salmon: all the Pacific species, a viewing window onto the river so that in autumn you watch the real run pass, and tanks where sturgeon nibble your fingers.
Lake Po Historic Site Nature Park
ポー川史跡自然公園
A national historic site where thousands of pit-dwelling hollows from the Jomon to the Okhotsk and Satsumon cultures dot the forest along the river. Trails lead through the hollows and out across a raised bog, with a museum at the entrance.
Autumn salmon run on the Shibetsu river

From September the river fills with chum salmon heading upstream, visible from bridges and the science park window. The town's harbour is one of the biggest salmon ports in Japan and the whole place smells of the season.

National Route 244 and 335 hug the shore north toward Rausu with Kunashiri Island across the water the whole way. Sea eagles sit on the beach in winter, and there are small fishing hamlets and river mouths to stop at.
Getting to Shibetsu
Nakashibetsu Airport is about 30 minutes by car. National Route 272 comes in from Kushiro in about two and a half hours, and Route 244 follows the coast south to Nemuro or north to Rausu. There is no railway. From Sapporo the drive is about six and a half hours.
Nemuro region: Fly to Nakashibetsu Airport or drive east from Kushiro. Distances are big; plan unhurried days.
When to visit Shibetsu
September and October for the salmon run and fresh roe, when the river and the port are at full pitch. June to August for the historic park trails and the strait at its calmest. Winter is quiet and cold, with eagles on the coast and drift ice some years.
What to eat in Shibetsu
Salmon in every form: fresh autumn chum, smoked and salted fish, and ikura roe that the town markets as its best product. Hokkai shrimp and scallops come from the strait, and the pastures inland supply milk and beef. A bowl of rice heaped with salmon and roe is the town meal.

Nemuro is where Japan runs out — and where Hokkaido feels wildest. Cape Nosappu is famed as the spot that greets the country's earliest sunrise; the impossibly thin Notsuke Peninsula curls into the sea past ghost forests of dead trees; sea eagles patrol the winter coast and dairy pastures roll inland as far as sight.
