Akkeshi means oysters — harvested year-round from a brackish lake, best with the town's own single malt from Japan's easternmost distillery.
Akkeshi is an old fishing port on a bay east of Kushiro, where Lake Akkeshi opens to the sea under a long red bridge. Its oysters are harvested year-round because the lake and bay run at different temperatures, and the town treats them as its whole identity, with festivals in spring and autumn. A whisky distillery now makes single malt in the sea fog, and the Bekanbeushi Marsh behind the lake is a Ramsar wetland full of cranes and waterfowl. Come hungry, and bring binoculars.

Michi-no-Eki Akkeshi Gourmet Park Conchiglie
道の駅 厚岸グルメパーク コンキリエ
The Michi-no-Eki (roadside station) on the hill above the harbour, built around oysters: you pick shellfish from the tanks and grill them yourself at charcoal tables, with the bay and the bridge below the windows.
Bekanbeushi Marsh and the Waterfowl Observation Center
別寒辺牛湿原と厚岸水鳥観察館
A Ramsar-listed river marsh feeding Lake Akkeshi, with a town-run observation centre on its shore. Red-crowned cranes nest here in summer and whooper swans and sea eagles arrive in winter.

A cliff headland south of the harbour with a short walk through forest to a lookout over Daikoku Island and the open Pacific. Fog is common in summer; the view is sharpest on autumn and winter mornings.
Kokutaiji Temple
国泰寺
One of three temples the Edo shogunate founded in Ezo in 1804 to anchor its presence on the eastern coast. The grounds and a small local museum next door tell the story of Akkeshi as a fishing and trading post long before Hokkaido's railways.
Getting to Akkeshi
Kushiro Airport is about 1.5 hours by car. Akkeshi station on the Nemuro Main Line (the Hanasaki Line section toward Nemuro) is in the town centre, around an hour from Kushiro by local train. Route 44 links Kushiro and Nemuro through the town; from Sapporo count on six hours or more by car.
Kushiro region: Kushiro Airport and JR Kushiro Station are the main gateways. Airport buses serve both the city centre and Lake Akan; check transport to wetland sites, the Teshikaga lakes and tour meeting points separately.
When to visit Akkeshi
Oysters are good all year, but the town's festivals are in May, when the cherry blossoms are late enough to pair with shellfish, and October. Summer is foggy and cool. December to February is best for eagles and swans on the lake, with clear cold skies over the bay.
What to eat in Akkeshi
Oysters raw, grilled, steamed and fried, plus large asari clams from the same lake. Autumn saury and kombu come off the boats, and the local single malt whisky is made with peat and sea air from the town itself. Deer from the surrounding hills appears on menus too.
