Kushiro City is the biggest city in eastern Hokkaido, a working Pacific fishing port where robatayaki charcoal grilling was born and where summer fog rolls in most afternoons. Japan's largest wetland, the Kushiro Marsh, begins just north of the streets, and since the city absorbed the Akan area it also owns Lake Akan with its marimo moss balls, Ainu kotan and hot-spring town. Not to be confused with the separate Kushiro Town next door. Come for sunsets over the harbour, cranes in winter and a base with real trains and flights for the whole east.

Kushiro Marsh from the city side

The city-run Marsh Observatory on the western rim has a rooftop deck and a loop boardwalk through the Hokuto forest, the easiest way to walk to the edge of the reed plain without a car full of gear.

The bridge over the Kushiro River mouth, with four bronze figures of the seasons on its railings. The harbour sunset seen from here is the city's signature view, and the fog makes the light softer rather than worse.
Lake Akan

A caldera lake inside Akan–Mashu National Park, famous for marimo, the round green algae balls. The lakeside has a hot-spring town, an Ainu kotan with craft workshops and a theatre, and Mt. Oakan rising straight from the far shore.

The city's crane facility in the Akan farmland, with year-round exhibits on the tancho and a winter feeding ground where wild red-crowned cranes gather in numbers from December through February.
Getting to Kushiro
Kushiro Airport (Tancho Kushiro Airport) is about 45 minutes by bus from the centre, with flights from Tokyo and Sapporo. JR limited expresses on the Nemuro Main Line reach Kushiro station from Sapporo in about four hours, and the Senmo Line to the marsh and Kawayu starts from here. By car from Sapporo, the Doto Expressway and Route 38 take about five hours.
Kushiro region: Kushiro Airport and JR Kushiro Station are the main gateways. Airport buses serve both the city centre and Lake Akan; check transport to wetland sites, the Teshikaga lakes and tour meeting points separately.
When to visit Kushiro
December to February for the cranes, when they gather at the feeding grounds around Akan and the marsh. June to September for the marsh and canoeing, with cool foggy days while the rest of Japan is hot. September and October bring the autumn saury landings and the clearest sunsets.
What to eat in Kushiro
Robatayaki started here: seafood and vegetables grilled over charcoal at the counter. Zangi, Hokkaido's marinated fried chicken, is also a Kushiro invention, and the morning market sells the katte-don, a rice bowl you top yourself from the fish stalls. Autumn saury, kombu, salmon roe and thin curly-noodle Kushiro ramen complete the list.
