Ikeda built a castle for wine — Japan's pioneering municipal winery has poured Tokachi reds since the 1960s.
Ikeda sits on the eastern Tokachi plain where the Tokachi and Toshibetsu rivers meet, and it is known throughout Japan as a wine town. In the 1960s the municipality itself started growing cold-hardy grapes and making wine to rescue a failing farm economy, and the hilltop winery above the station, built like a European castle, is still run by the town. Below it the river holds a weir where salmon can be watched climbing in autumn. It is a natural stop on the rail line east of Obihiro.

Wine Castle
ワイン城
The town's own winery on a hill above the station, a castle-shaped building with cellars of aging barrels, tasting rooms and a terrace over the plain. Tokachi Wine has been made here since the 1960s.
Chiyoda Weir
千代田堰堤
A weir on the Tokachi River south of the centre where autumn salmon leap, with a fish ladder and an observation hall that let you watch them from below the waterline.
Autumn Wine Festival
秋のワイン祭り
Held in October on the grounds of the Wine Castle: a whole roast beef carved for the crowd, local wine served to all and a taste of how a small town celebrates its own harvest.

The park on the hill beside the castle, with cherry trees in May, a campground and a small ski hill in winter, and the vineyards that started it all on the slopes around.
Getting to Ikeda
Ikeda station on the JR Nemuro Main Line is a limited express stop about 25 minutes east of Obihiro, and the Wine Castle is a short walk uphill from it. The Doto Expressway's Ikeda interchange and National Route 38 pass through, with Route 242 heading north to Honbetsu. Tokachi-Obihiro Airport is about 50 minutes by car.
Tokachi region: Fly to Tokachi-Obihiro Airport or take the JR limited express from Sapporo (about 2.5 hours). A car unlocks the garden road.
When to visit Ikeda
September to October for the grape harvest, the wine festival and salmon at the weir, the town's best weeks by far. May for cherry blossom in the castle park. Winter is quiet, with the cellars open and the plain white outside.
What to eat in Ikeda
Tokachi Wine, red and white from cold-hardy grapes, plus brandy from the same cellars. Beef finished with wine lees, hearty stews and cheese at the castle restaurant, and beans, potatoes and wheat from the fields around town.

Tokachi is agricultural Hokkaido at full scale: a vast inland plain where the fields run to the horizon and much of what Japan eats is grown. Obihiro, its capital, invented butadon — the caramelized pork rice bowl — and keeps the world's only banei draft-horse racing.
