Otofuke's Tokachigawa Onsen is farm country's answer to a spa town — rare moor hot springs the color of dark tea, minutes from Obihiro.
Otofuke lies directly across the Tokachi River from Obihiro, close enough to be a suburb yet with a hot-spring town, Tokachigawa Onsen, on its riverbank. The springs are moor water, brown with plant matter from ancient peat, soft on the skin and rare anywhere in the world. Around it stretches farmland that makes Otofuke one of Japan's biggest producers of wheat and beans. Come for a bath and a slow night within minutes of the city.

Tokachigawa Onsen
十勝川温泉
A riverside spa town whose amber moor springs are the region's signature bath and a designated Hokkaido Heritage. Most inns sit along the north bank with views over the river and the flat farmland beyond.
Tokachigaoka Observatory

A low hill above the onsen town with a flower clock in the park below and a wide view over the Tokachi River, Obihiro and the Hidaka range on a clear day.
Tokachigawa Swan Festival Sairinka
十勝川白鳥まつり彩凛華
From January into February a park beside the hot-spring town becomes a field of coloured lights synchronized to music, staged for the swans that winter on the unfrozen river below the hot springs.

十勝エコロジーパーク
A large prefectural park on the river flats beside the onsen, with campgrounds, wide lawns, a visitor centre and trails through the riverside forest, good for families and cyclists.
Getting to Otofuke
Tokachi-Obihiro Airport is about 50 minutes by car, and Obihiro station, the nearest rail stop, is 20 to 30 minutes by bus or car across the river; there is no station in Otofuke itself. The Doto Expressway's Otofuke-Obihiro interchange is in the town, and National Route 241 runs north toward Shihoro and Kamishihoro.
Tokachi region: Fly to Tokachi-Obihiro Airport or take the JR limited express from Sapporo (about 2.5 hours). A car unlocks the garden road.
When to visit Otofuke
Autumn, September to November, is the sweet spot: harvest on the plain, colour in the riverside trees and hot springs that feel earned in the cool air. January to February for the light festival and swans. Summer is fine for the park and cycling.
What to eat in Otofuke
Otofuke is one of Japan's largest growers of wheat, soybeans and adzuki beans, and its dairy farms feed cheese and ice cream makers across the plain. Inn dinners lean on Tokachi beef, pork and local vegetables, and bakeries and sweet shops use the town's own flour and beans.
