One of Hokkaido's 179 towns
Nakatonbetsu中頓別町
A limestone cave and gold in the rivers of the far north
Soya region · Japan's northern tip — and the flower islands beyond it.
Nakatonbetsu hides a limestone cave park in the far north — and you can still pan for real gold in its rivers like the pioneers did.
Nakatonbetsu is an inland town on the upper Tonbetsu River, south of Hamatonbetsu on Route 275, in the hills between the Okhotsk coast and the Teshio valley. It is dairy and forestry country, and its two claims to fame are underground and underfoot: a limestone cave formed from ancient shell beds, and rivers where gold was once dug and can still be panned. Come for a slow day of caves, gold and mountain air on the way to Cape Soya.

What to see in Nakatonbetsu
Nakatonbetsu Limestone Cave
中頓別鍾乳洞
A cave hollowed out of limestone that began as a shell bed on the sea floor, unusual for a cave this far north. It sits in a nature park with trails through the surrounding forest.
Gold panning on the Pechan River
ペーチャン川の砂金掘り
The town keeps a gold-panning park on the Pechan River, where the late-1890s rush once drew prospectors. In summer you rent a pan and work the gravel yourself; flakes still turn up.
Mt. Pinneshiri and its roadside station
ピンネシリ岳と道の駅ピンネシリ
A conical 700-metre peak that dominates the town, with a hiking trail to the summit and views across the Soya hills. The Michi-no-Eki (roadside station) at its foot on Route 275 has a campground.
Getting to Nakatonbetsu
Route 275 runs through the town, linking Otoineppu on the Soya Main Line to the south with Hamatonbetsu and the Okhotsk coast to the north. There is no station in town; the nearest JR stop is Otoineppu, about 40 minutes by car. Wakkanai Airport is about an hour and a half, Asahikawa about three hours by road.
Soya region: Fly or take the long, scenic drive/train to Wakkanai; ferries to Rishiri and Rebun sail from Wakkanai port.
When to visit Nakatonbetsu
June to September, when the cave park, the gold-panning park and the Pinneshiri trail are all open and the hills are green. Autumn colour in the birch and maple forests comes in early October. Winter is long, deep and mostly for locals.
What to eat in Nakatonbetsu
This is dairy country, so milk and dairy sweets are the local staples, along with vegetables from small farms in the valley. Wild plants from the hills appear in spring, and the Okhotsk coast, half an hour away, supplies the fish. Simple, honest and not a seafood town.

Soya is as far north as Japan goes. At Cape Soya, a monument marks the country's northernmost point; on a clear day Sakhalin floats on the horizon. Wakkanai, the last city, has the pleasant end-of-the-line atmosphere of true frontier towns.
