Sarufutsu, a village of scallop fishermen on the Okhotsk, hauls one of the biggest scallop catches in Japan — try them thick-grilled at the roadside station.
Sarufutsu is the largest village in Hokkaido by area, a long strip of Okhotsk coastline and inland pasture between Wakkanai and Hamatonbetsu. Its economy is scallops: the village lands one of the biggest catches in Japan from fishing grounds off its own shore, and the shells pile up in white mountains by the harbour. There is no town to speak of, just Route 238, the sea, the cattle and the sky, which is exactly why cyclists and road-trippers love it.

Michi-no-Eki Sarufutsu Park
道の駅さるふつ公園
The village's Michi-no-Eki (roadside station) on Route 238, set in a park with a campground, a hot-spring bath and a lookout over the Okhotsk. Grilled scallops from the harbour are the reason most people stop.
Esanuka Line
エサヌカ線
A farm road that runs arrow-straight for kilometres across flat coastal pasture with no poles, no signs and nothing on the horizon. It has become a pilgrimage for touring riders heading to Cape Soya.
Sarufutsu River and Lake Poro
猿払川とポロ沼
A slow, peat-brown river winding through wetland to the sea, one of the last strongholds of the itou, Japan's largest freshwater fish. Anglers come from across the country for catch-and-release fishing.
Getting to Sarufutsu
Route 238 runs the length of the village along the Okhotsk coast. Wakkanai Airport is about an hour's drive to the north-west, and Wakkanai city is roughly the same; there is no railway, so a car or bicycle is the practical way in. From Sapporo count on around five and a half hours by road.
Soya region: Fly or take the long, scenic drive/train to Wakkanai; ferries to Rishiri and Rebun sail from Wakkanai port.
When to visit Sarufutsu
Late May to September, when the pasture greens up, the coast road is clear and the scallop season is in full swing. Autumn brings the itou anglers. In winter the Okhotsk freezes and drift ice reaches the shore, but the wind makes it a season for the hardy only.
What to eat in Sarufutsu
Scallops, in every form: grilled in the shell, dried, in butter, in curry. The village is one of Japan's biggest scallop producers, and dairy from the inland pastures is the other staple, sold as local milk and soft-serve. Scallop shells even get crushed into road surfaces.

Soya is as far north as Japan goes. At Cape Soya, a monument marks the country's northernmost point; on a clear day Sakhalin floats on the horizon. Wakkanai, the last city, has the pleasant end-of-the-line atmosphere of true frontier towns.
