Rumoi processes more herring roe than anywhere in Japan — and its Golden Cape really does turn gold when the sun drops into the Japan Sea.
Rumoi is the main town of Hokkaido's northern Japan Sea coast, a working port about two and a half hours by car from Sapporo. It grew on herring, and it still processes more herring roe (kazunoko) than anywhere in Japan, so the smell of the sea and the sight of drying racks are part of the place. Golden Cape at the edge of the harbour is the town's evening ritual: the sun drops straight into the Japan Sea and the water really does go gold. Come for the sunset, the seafood and a base for the coast road north.

What to see in Rumoi
Golden Cape
黄金岬
A rocky cape at the mouth of the harbour, once a lookout for spotting herring shoals and now the town's sunset spot. The rocks glow when the sun sets over the Japan Sea, and a small municipal sea museum stands beside it.
Senbodai lookout
千望台
A hilltop viewpoint above the city with the port, the town grid and the Japan Sea laid out below. It is a short drive from the centre and the easiest place to understand how Rumoi sits between hills and sea.
Michi-no-Eki Rumoi
道の駅るもい
The roadside station (Michi-no-Eki) sits in a large park near the port, with local seafood and produce, wide lawns and easy parking. A natural first stop before heading up the coast road.
Getting to Rumoi
Asahikawa Airport is the closest, about two hours by car; New Chitose is around three. From Sapporo take the expressway to Fukagawa and then the Fukagawa-Rumoi Expressway, about two and a half hours, or Route 231 along the coast for the scenic version. Express buses run from Sapporo and Asahikawa. There is no passenger rail, so plan on a car or bus.
Rumoi region: A driving region: the Ororon Line coast road from the Sapporo side is the whole point. Ferries to Teuri and Yagishiri leave from Haboro.
When to visit Rumoi
June to August for sea urchin, sweet shrimp and the long sunsets over the Japan Sea, when the coast road is at its best. September and October bring calmer weather and autumn seafood. Winter is grey and windy on this coast, with heavy snow, so it is a season for the table rather than the outdoors.
What to eat in Rumoi
Herring roe (kazunoko) is the town's identity: Rumoi processes more of it than anywhere in Japan, and herring itself turns up grilled, pickled and on soba. Sweet shrimp, sea urchin, octopus and flatfish come in through the port, and the inland side of town grows rice and wheat.

Rumoi is a coastline more than a destination — and what a coastline. The shore road north from Mashike runs for hours with the Japan Sea on one side and green hills on the other, and locals will tell you the sunsets here are the best on the island.
