Nayoro grows Japan's best sticky rice, flips to sunflower fields in August, and runs a serious public observatory under dark northern skies.
Nayoro is the main town of the northern Kamikawa region, on the Teshio River about 1.5 hours north of Asahikawa. Its farms grow more glutinous rice than anywhere in Japan, and in August the fields north of town turn into sunflower seas. Winter is the other reason to come: the dry cold produces diamond dust and sun pillars, and the city runs a serious public observatory under some of Hokkaido's darkest skies. A good stop for anyone heading up the Soya line toward Wakkanai.

What to see in Nayoro
Sunflower fields
ひまわり畑
In August the fields around the northern district of Chiebun bloom with millions of sunflowers, planted as green manure and opened to visitors. Fields shift year to year, so ask at the roadside station.
Kitasubaru Observatory
なよろ市立天文台きたすばる
A public observatory in the prefectural Sun Pillar Park on the hill above town, with a large telescope and night viewing sessions. The park itself is a good place for winter diamond dust.
Piyashiri ski area
ピヤシリスキー場
The city ski hill on Mt. Piyashiri, known for very dry powder thanks to the inland cold. Small by resort standards but reliable snow.
Nayoro Snow Festival
なよろ雪質日本一フェスティバル
A February festival celebrating the town's dry snow, with snow sculptures, ice slides and sun-pillar watching on cold mornings. A small-town affair, but a good excuse to see the far north in deep winter.
Getting to Nayoro
Asahikawa Airport is about 1.5 hours by car. Route 40 runs through town and the Doo Expressway ends at Shibetsu-Kenbuchi just to the south. JR Soya Main Line trains stop at Nayoro station, where many local services begin and end. From Sapporo it is about three hours by car.
Kamikawa region: Asahikawa has its own airport and fast JR links from Sapporo (about 85 minutes). Furano and Biei are best by car or the summer sightseeing trains.
When to visit Nayoro
August for the sunflowers, which peak around mid-month. January and February for diamond dust and sun pillars, which appear on still, bitterly cold mornings. Summer is short and comfortable; the shoulder seasons are muddy.
What to eat in Nayoro
Glutinous rice is the signature, turned into mochi, rice cakes and sweets sold all over town. Asparagus in early summer and pumpkins in autumn are the other farm staples, and the sunflower fields yield oil.
