Cabbage fields half an hour from Sapporo

Sorachi region · Coal country turned wine valley — Hokkaido's quiet middle.

Nanporo is a market-garden town half an hour from Sapporo, known for cabbage fields and a big roadside farm stand culture.

Nanporo is a flat farming town on the Ishikari plain between the Yubari and Chitose rivers, close enough to Sapporo that many residents commute. There is no station and no mountain; what it has is fertile black soil, cabbage and rice fields that run to the horizon, a town hot spring, a lakeside park for camping and fishing, and farm stands where Sapporo families fill the car on weekends. It suits travelers who want an easy taste of rural Hokkaido without leaving the capital far behind.

The town's hot-spring facility on the edge of the fields, a short drive from the farm stands and the lake park. The obvious stop after an afternoon of shopping for cabbages and rice.

Mie Lake Park

三重湖公園

A park around a long oxbow lake left by the old Yubari River, with a campground, boat rental and freshwater fishing. In winter people fish for smelt through the ice.

When to visit Nanporo

June to October for the fields, the park and the farm stands, with the cabbage harvest peaking from midsummer into autumn. Late September brings new rice. Winter is short-distance fun: smelt fishing on Mie Lake and the hot spring afterward.

What to eat in Nanporo

Cabbage is the town crop, sold whole at the stands and turned into a local cabbage kimchi that has become Nanporo's best-known product. Rice and wheat from the same black soil, and a range of vegetables through the season, fill the rest of the market tables.

Sorachi is the Hokkaido most travelers drive straight through — and that's exactly why it stays wonderful. A century ago this valley powered Japan with coal; towns like Yubari and Mikasa still carry that industrial memory in museums, rail relics and quiet main streets.
