Akabira preserves its coal heritage honestly — a guidance center at the old mine and a 777-step stairway up the slag mountain for the view.
Akabira is a small city on the Sorachi River between Takikawa and Ashibetsu, and it tells the coal story more honestly than almost anywhere in Hokkaido. The winding tower of a former mine still stands over the town, a city-run guidance centre next to it explains how the coal was cut and hauled, and a stairway of 777 steps climbs the old slag heap for a view over the whole valley. Come for industrial history, then stay the night at the campground and hot spring on the hill.

Coal Mine Heritage Guidance Centre
炭鉱遺産ガイダンス施設
The city's interpretation centre beside the preserved headframe of the former Sumitomo Akabira mine. Guided tours go inside the winding house, and the exhibits show real machinery rather than models.
Zuriyama Stairway
ズリ山階段
A stairway of 777 steps straight up the old slag heap on the edge of town. The number is painted on every landing, and the top gives a full view of the Sorachi valley from Takikawa to Ashibetsu.
Elm Highland
エルム高原
A city recreation area on the hills above town with an auto-campground, a hot spring, forest walks and a small lake. The easy place to sleep after a day of coal history.
Getting to Akabira
Akabira station is on the JR Nemuro Main Line, about 15 minutes from Takikawa toward Furano. By car take Route 38 from Takikawa (about 20 minutes); Takikawa IC on the Do-o Expressway is the nearest interchange. Asahikawa Airport is a little over an hour; Sapporo is about 1 hour 45 minutes.
Sorachi region: An easy detour off the Sapporo–Asahikawa corridor by car or JR. Wineries are best reached by car.
When to visit Akabira
May to October, when the stairway is clear of snow and the campground is open; July and August are best for a night on the hill. The guidance centre runs year-round, and winter gives the headframe a stark look against the snow.
What to eat in Akabira
Akabira's local dish is gangan-nabe, a hot pot of pork offal and vegetables cooked in a tin-can style pot, born from miners' cooking. Rice and vegetables from the Sorachi valley are the everyday produce, and the city is also known for its salted-offal grilling culture.
