Bibai美唄市
Yakitori skewers, sculpture and ten thousand geese
Sorachi region · Coal country turned wine valley — Hokkaido's quiet middle.
Bibai's soul food is motsu-yakitori — whole-skewer chicken grilled since the mining days — and each spring thousands of geese stop at Miyajima Marsh.
Bibai is a former coal city on Route 12 between Iwamizawa and Sunagawa, an hour north of Sapporo. Its two claims to fame could not be more different: a marsh on the Ishikari plain where tens of thousands of white-fronted geese rest each spring and autumn, and an old elementary school in the mining hills turned into a sculpture park of white marble. Add the whole-skewer chicken yakitori the miners ate and you have a good day trip from Sapporo.

What to see in Bibai
Miyajima Marsh
宮島沼
A small marsh on the plain west of town, registered under the Ramsar Convention, where greater white-fronted geese stop in April and again in September and October. Dawn and dusk flights fill the sky.
Arte Piazza Bibai
アルテピアッツァ美唄
A sculpture park in a former elementary school in the old mining hills, with marble and bronze works by a sculptor born here set among lawns, a stream and the old wooden classrooms.
Coal Memorial Forest Park
炭鉱メモリアル森林公園
Two old headframes and a coal-loading structure kept as monuments on the site of a former mine, with picnic grounds around them. The most direct reminder of what Bibai was.
Getting to Bibai
Bibai station on the JR Hakodate Main Line is about 45 minutes from Sapporo by limited express and around an hour by local train. By car, Route 12 or the Do-o Expressway (Bibai IC) from Sapporo takes about an hour; Asahikawa is a similar distance north. Miyajima Marsh and the sculpture park need a car or taxi.
Sorachi region: An easy detour off the Sapporo–Asahikawa corridor by car or JR. Wineries are best reached by car.
When to visit Bibai
April and again late September to October for the geese at Miyajima Marsh, when the sky at dawn is the reason to come. June to September for the sculpture park lawns. Yakitori is a year-round comfort, best on a snowy night.
What to eat in Bibai
Bibai yakitori is the town's dish: chicken, liver, gizzard and onion on one skewer, salted, a habit from the coal days. Torimeshi, rice cooked with chicken, is the other local staple. The plain grows rice and asparagus, and Bibai asparagus is one of Hokkaido's best-known spring vegetables.
Bibai in context: the Sorachi region

Sorachi is the Hokkaido most travelers drive straight through — and that's exactly why it stays wonderful. A century ago this valley powered Japan with coal; towns like Yubari and Mikasa still carry that industrial memory in museums, rail relics and quiet main streets.
