Yubari means two things in Japan: the country's most famous luxury melon, and a poignant coal-mining past you can still trace through the valley.
Yubari runs up a narrow valley in the Yubari Mountains east of Sapporo, and its name means two things to Japanese people: the country's most famous luxury melon and the coal that once powered the nation. The mines closed, the population fell, and what is left is a town that keeps its history in a coal museum and its pride in orange-fleshed melons ripening in greenhouses every summer. Come for the industrial past, the alpine hike up Mt. Yubari and the autumn colours of the gorge park.

Yubari Coal Museum
夕張市石炭博物館
The city's museum of coal mining, built beside a former shaft, walks you through the whole story from the first seams to the closures, with a section of real underground gallery you can enter.
Mt. Yubari
夕張岳
A serpentine peak on the border with Furano, famous among botanists for alpine flowers found nowhere else. The trail from the Yubari side is a full summer day and opens in June.
Takinoue Park
滝の上公園
A gorge park on the Yubari River where the water drops through rock channels at Chidorigafuchi Falls. A bridge crosses the ravine, and in October the maples turn it into the city's best autumn walk.
Michi-no-Eki Yubari Melo-do
道の駅夕張メロード
The roadside station (Michi-no-Eki) next to Shin-Yubari station on the Sekisho Line. In melon season the whole hall smells of fruit; the rest of the year it is the easiest place to pick up local produce on the way through.
Getting to Yubari
New Chitose Airport is about an hour away by car via Route 274 or the Doto Expressway (Yubari IC). From Sapporo allow about 1.5 hours. The only active railway station is Shin-Yubari on the JR Sekisho Line, on the Sapporo–Obihiro route; the old branch into the valley centre is gone, so the museum and parks are reached by car or local bus.
Sorachi region: An easy detour off the Sapporo–Asahikawa corridor by car or JR. Wineries are best reached by car.
When to visit Yubari
June to August for melons, when greenhouses across the valley are harvesting and every roadside stand is stacked with them. Early October for foliage in Takinoue Park and along the mountain roads. Mt. Yubari is a July flower hike; winter is deep and quiet.
What to eat in Yubari
Yubari melon, orange-fleshed and sold by the whole fruit or by the slice in season, is the reason most people stop. The old miners' town also keeps its own curry soba, a thick curry broth over buckwheat noodles, and the valley farms grow rice and vegetables for local tables.
