Iwamizawa grew up as a railway junction for the coalfields; today it's rose gardens, campgrounds and one of Sorachi's growing wineries.
Iwamizawa is the biggest city in Sorachi and its transport hub, forty minutes east of Sapporo where the Hakodate Main Line meets the Muroran Main Line. It grew as the railway junction that hauled coal out of the valleys, and the station still sets the tone. Around it are a large city park with one of Hokkaido's biggest rose gardens, a garden left from an old inn, and hills where some of the region's best-known wineries plant their vines. It is also one of the snowiest cities in Japan.

Iwamizawa Park rose garden
いわみざわ公園バラ園
A city park on the hills east of town with a rose garden of hundreds of varieties in terraced beds, plus lawns, a campground and a forest trail. Peak bloom is June and again in September.
Gyokusenkan Garden
玉泉館跡地公園
The Japanese garden of a vanished inn, kept as a public park near the centre. Ponds, stone lanterns and a natural spring under old trees; a quiet fifteen minutes between trains.
JR Iwamizawa Station
JR岩見沢駅
The station building itself, rebuilt in glass, brick and old rail steel and given a Good Design grand prize, is a destination for rail fans. Old locomotive parts and a local history exhibit are inside.
Tonebetsu Nature Park
利根別自然公園
A forest park on the north edge of the city with a reservoir, marsh boardwalks and easy loop trails through mixed woodland. Good for birds in spring and quiet colour in October.
Getting to Iwamizawa
From Sapporo, JR Hakodate Main Line trains reach Iwamizawa in about 40 minutes by rapid service; the Muroran Main Line branches here toward Kuriyama and Tomakomai. By car take Route 12 or the Do-o Expressway (Iwamizawa IC), about 50 minutes. New Chitose Airport is roughly an hour by car.
Sorachi region: An easy detour off the Sapporo–Asahikawa corridor by car or JR. Wineries are best reached by car.
When to visit Iwamizawa
June for the roses and the first vineyard green, September for the second rose bloom and grape harvest. Winter here is serious, with some of the deepest snow of any Japanese city, so plan on JR rather than driving in January and February.
What to eat in Iwamizawa
Iwamizawa sits in wheat and onion country and grows a large share of Hokkaido's onions. The hills produce grapes for the wineries that put Sorachi on the wine map, and rice from the plain fills the roadside stands.
