Fukagawa is rice and buckwheat country on the Ishikari plain — its roadside station is famous for rice-ball breakfasts done right.
Fukagawa is a farming city on the Ishikari River between Takikawa and Asahikawa, and the crossroads where the road to the Rumoi coast leaves Route 12. Rice is everything here: the roadside station on the highway is built around it, and the town grows one of Hokkaido's biggest buckwheat harvests as well. Apples ripen on the south-facing hills of Otoe, a viewpoint above the valley has become a small cult stop, and the city's farm-experience hall has an onsen for the evening.

Michi-no-Eki Rice Land Fukagawa
道の駅ライスランドふかがわ
A roadside station (Michi-no-Eki) on Route 12 devoted to rice: a counter of freshly made rice balls in a dozen fillings, local rice by the bag, and a farm market that fills up in autumn.
Totoro Pass viewpoint

A parking park on a hill road above Otoe with a wide view over the Ishikari valley toward Asahikawa, and an old bus repainted as the 'cat bus' that has made it a photo stop.

Getting to Fukagawa
Fukagawa station is on the JR Hakodate Main Line, about 25 minutes from Asahikawa and around 1 hour 15 minutes from Sapporo by limited express. By car, Route 12 or the Do-o Expressway (Fukagawa IC) runs to Sapporo in about 1 hour 45 minutes; Asahikawa Airport is about 45 minutes. Route 233 and the Fukagawa–Rumoi Expressway head west to the Sea of Japan.
Sorachi region: An easy detour off the Sapporo–Asahikawa corridor by car or JR. Wineries are best reached by car.
When to visit Fukagawa
September and October are the point: rice harvest, new-crop rice balls at the roadside station, apples on the Otoe hills and buckwheat flowering white in late summer just before. Early May for cherry blossom, June to August for the green plain and the viewpoint at sunset.
What to eat in Fukagawa
Rice first, eaten as fresh rice balls and bought by the bag. Buckwheat noodles from one of Hokkaido's largest soba harvests, apples and cider from the Otoe orchards, and black rice and other heritage grains grown by local farmers make up the rest.
