One of Hokkaido's 179 towns

Naie奈井江町

A rice town with a Finnish roadside station

Sorachi region · Coal country turned wine valley — Hokkaido's quiet middle.

Naie sits quietly between Sunagawa and Bibai — rice paddies, a town forest park and old Sorachi railway rhythms.

Naie is a small rice-growing town on Route 12 between Bibai and Sunagawa, with the Ishikari River on one side and forested hills on the other. It keeps a sister-city bond with Hausjärvi in Finland, which explains the name and look of its roadside station. There is a forest park on the hillside, a working station on the main line, and not much else, which is the point: it is the quiet middle of Sorachi where you stop for a rice ball and a walk rather than a checklist.

What to see in Naie

Michi-no-Eki Hausjärvi Naie

道の駅ハウスヤルビ奈井江

A roadside station (Michi-no-Eki) on Route 12 named after the town's Finnish sister city, with a log-built look, local rice and vegetables, and a rest stop that most drivers between Sapporo and Asahikawa know.

Niwayama Forest Nature Park

にわ山森林自然公園

A town forest park on the hills east of the centre with walking trails through mixed woodland, a lookout over the Ishikari valley and picnic space. Quiet on any weekday.

Ishikari riverbank and paddy roads

石狩川の堤防と田んぼ道

West of town the levee of the Ishikari River and the grid of paddy roads run flat toward the Kabato hills on the far bank, with Pinneshiri standing over them. Cycling country from May to October.

Getting to Naie

Naie station on the JR Hakodate Main Line is served by local trains, about 20 minutes from Iwamizawa on the way to Takikawa; limited expresses do not stop. By car it is Route 12 from Sapporo, about 1 hour 20 minutes, or the Do-o Expressway to Naie-Sunagawa IC. Asahikawa Airport is about an hour.

Sorachi region: An easy detour off the Sapporo–Asahikawa corridor by car or JR. Wineries are best reached by car.

When to visit Naie

May for the flooded paddies mirroring the sky, September for the harvest and new rice at the roadside station. June to October for the forest park trails. Winter is deep snow and a town that mostly stays indoors, which has its own quiet appeal from a train window.

What to eat in Naie

Rice is what Naie grows and sells, by the bag and as rice balls at the roadside station. Seasonal vegetables from the plain and mountain vegetables from the hills in spring follow, along with simple sweets and snacks made from local rice.

Sorachi is the Hokkaido most travelers drive straight through — and that's exactly why it stays wonderful. A century ago this valley powered Japan with coal; towns like Yubari and Mikasa still carry that industrial memory in museums, rail relics and quiet main streets.
