Utashinai, once a booming coal town, is now Japan's least-populous city — a quiet valley with a ski hill and outsized character.
Utashinai is a narrow valley town in the hills between Sunagawa and Akabira, and it holds a title nobody set out to win: the least-populous city in Japan. A century ago its mines drew tens of thousands; today a few thousand people live along one road with a hot-spring bathhouse, a small museum of local history and a ski ridge above. It is a place for travelers curious about what remains after the coal, and for a bowl of nanko, the horse-offal stew the miners brought north.

Utashinai Local History Museum (Yume-tsumugi)

The city museum by the main road, with mining tools, photographs of the valley at its peak and the story of the drama series that made the fictional town of 'Kanashibetsu' famous here.
Kamoi-dake
かもい岳
The ridge above the town, with ski slopes cut into its side and a view down the whole valley from the top in summer. The upper road gives a good sense of how tightly the town is folded into the hills.

The town chose an Alpine look decades ago, and Tyrolean-style buildings still line the main road. A city-run hot spring at the head of the valley, built in the same style, is the place to soak after a walk through the old coal town.
Getting to Utashinai
There is no railway in Utashinai. The nearest stations are Sunagawa on the JR Hakodate Main Line and Akabira on the Nemuro Main Line, each about 15 minutes away by car or bus along prefectural roads. From Sapporo it is about 1 hour 45 minutes by car via Route 12 to Sunagawa or Naie, then up the valley; Asahikawa Airport is a little over an hour.
Sorachi region: An easy detour off the Sapporo–Asahikawa corridor by car or JR. Wineries are best reached by car.
When to visit Utashinai
June to October, when the valley roads and the ridge are clear and the hot spring is a good end to a day of coal-town wandering. Winter is long and snowy and the ski slope is the town's one busy place; nanko stew tastes best then.
What to eat in Utashinai
Nanko is the miners' dish: horse intestine simmered with miso, brought here by workers from the Akita mines, and it is still cooked in the valley. Beyond that the town relies on Sorachi produce from the rice towns down the road, rice and vegetables above all.
