Ashibetsu calls itself 'the village where stars fall' — big mountain skies above, and a homely chop-suey ramen called gatatan below.
Ashibetsu lies in the mountains east of Takikawa on the road to Furano, where the Sorachi River comes down out of the Yubari range. It calls itself 'the village where stars fall' for good reason: there is very little light, and the sky over the valley is genuinely dark. Once a coal city, it is now a quiet base for the peaks around Mt. Ashibetsu, a dam lake with a campground, and a thick Chinese-style soup called gatatan that the town adopted from returnees after the war.

What to see in Ashibetsu
Mt. Ashibetsu
芦別岳
The highest peak of the Yubari Mountains, a sharp summit above the Furano side. The main trail starts from Yamabe in Furano, but from Ashibetsu the mountain fills the eastern skyline every clear morning.
Sandan Falls
三段滝
A three-tiered cascade on the Ashibetsu River beside Route 452 toward Furano, where the river is squeezed through hard rock. A short walk from the parking area; best in snowmelt and autumn colour.
Lake Takisato
滝里湖
A dam lake on the Sorachi River south of the city with a public auto-campground on its shore, canoeing on still mornings and a road that follows the water toward Furano.
Ashibetsu Onsen
芦別温泉
A hot spring on the hills above the town centre, a short drive up from the valley floor. Once the sun goes down, the dark sky the city is named for opens overhead.
Getting to Ashibetsu
Ashibetsu station is on the JR Nemuro Main Line between Takikawa and Furano, about 30 minutes from Takikawa. By car it is Route 38 from Takikawa (roughly 30 minutes), or Route 452 through the mountains from Mikasa. Asahikawa Airport is about an hour and a quarter; Sapporo is about two hours.
Sorachi region: An easy detour off the Sapporo–Asahikawa corridor by car or JR. Wineries are best reached by car.
When to visit Ashibetsu
July and August for the campground and the mountain roads, with stargazing on moonless nights. Late September to mid-October for the colour along the Sorachi River and at Sandan Falls. Winter is heavy snow and the season for gatatan by the bowl.
What to eat in Ashibetsu
Gatatan is the local bowl: a thick, starchy soup crowded with vegetables, pork and seafood, eaten on its own or over ramen. Rice from the valley floor is the main crop, and mountain vegetables come down from the surrounding hills in spring.

Sorachi is the Hokkaido most travelers drive straight through — and that's exactly why it stays wonderful. A century ago this valley powered Japan with coal; towns like Yubari and Mikasa still carry that industrial memory in museums, rail relics and quiet main streets.
